Agnes Caroline Rost, 101, of Crookston, MN, died peacefully late Monday evening, July 7, 2014, at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston. Agnes was born to Peder S. and Pauline (Peterson) Sevald in Garden Township of Polk County, near Winger, MN, on May 3, 1913. She was raised on the family's farm, baptized and confirmed at the Union Lake Free Lutheran Church, and attended the nearby Hazel Hill Country School. Her high school years were spent boarding at the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston. She graduated from the School in 1931. On September 26, 1936 Agnes was united in marriage to Oliver Englbret Rost at Fertile, MN. Their marriage was blessed by the births of 3 children: Oris, Shirley and Alvin. The couple lived and farmed in Garden Township until moving to Crookston in 1957. For the next 28 years Agnes was employed by the Bethesda Nursing Home, first in the housekeeping department and later as an aide. She retired in 1985. Sadly, Oliver passed away on January 24, 1978. Beginning in the mid-1980's Agnes became very active in the Foster Grandparent program of Crookston Public Schools. Being among so many children just starting their school years kept her young, and the kids loved her just as much as she loved them.
Agnes was very appreciative of nature and the outdoors and looked forward every spring to seeing butterflies do their graceful dance among the flowers. She was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting, and during her lifetime crocheted countless numbers of crosses for the world's mission children and our soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. Agnes always wanted to do what she could for the community and was a longtime blood donor, giving as recently as age 98. She was a lifelong member of the Union Lake Free Lutheran Church, and also held memberships in the Morgensol Chapter of the Sons of Norway, the Crookston Garden Club, and the Golden Link Senior Citizens Center. Agnes moved to the Villa from her Oak Court Apartment in 2002, and over the years formed many friendships among the staff and her fellow residents. She will be dearly missed by all who shared in her life. Loving family members include her 3 children: Oris Rost of Circle Pines, MN, Shirley Rubenstein of Dallas, TX, and Alvin (Susan) Rost of Park Rapids, MN; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren including: Thomas (Beth )Rost -Madeline and Leah, Timothy (Donna) Rost-Casey and Brandon, Vince (Kyong) Rost-Oris and Tiger, Michael (Karen) Rubenstein, Alyssa(Jon) Marker-Madeline and Jack, Michelle Rost, Douglas Rost, and Jennifer (Eric) Zeltwanger-William and Henry; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to Oliver, her beloved husband of 41 years, she was preceded in death by her parents, Peder and Pauline Sevald; son-in-law, David Rubenstein; daughter-in-law, Hazel Rost; and 4 siblings: Cora Irwin, Sanford Sevald, Perry Sevald, and Helen Larson. May God bless Agnes' memory.
