Alice Marie Dale, 88, of Crookston, MN, died late Sunday evening, January 12, 2014, in the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, with several of her family at her side. Alice was born at Crookston on March 11, 1925, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Von Holdt) Ruther. She grew up and was educated in rural Crookston. She was united in marriage with Roy Erving Morvig on June 23, 1944. Alice and Roy then moved to Texas until his death in early 1945, while serving his country. Alice then returned to the Crookston area. She was united in marriage with Raymond Maxwell Dale on October 4, 1947 in Climax, MN. They lived at rural Crookston beginning in 1953. Alice spent the early years of her marriage raising and caring for her family. As the children got older, she worked at the Marvin Johnson Egg Farm, then for Simplot and Luckows Potato Farm and from 1984 to the present she worked with the Polk County Historical Society. Alice cared for many family members' children over the years, taking them in and raising them along with her own children. She cared for her cousins, Bernice Lehman and Kenny Lehman for thirty-five years and took great pleasure in providing this special care. When her children were young, they remembered her baking bread or her famous fry bread and the smell would draw them home, the butter melting on the warm slices. She would bake a quad or quint batch of cookies and the boys would "help" eat them. Alice collected dolls of many kinds, including Barbie's, American Girl Dolls, Little House on the Prairie Dolls and Madame Alexander Dolls. She did needlepoint, rosemaling, painting, knitting and ceramics. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, she was a member of the choir and especially enjoyed the "I Believe Cantata" that was done for several years at Christmas time. She served as an adult leader for 4-H, receiving recognition for Meritorious Service to 4-H, the Experienced American Award in August of 1993. She was also involved with the Crookston American Legion. She enjoyed flower gardening at home and at the museum. She received the Lifetime Member Award in November of 2012 and was named Museum Director Emeriti in July of 2013 in recognition of her hard work and dedication to the Polk County Historical Society, serving as a Board Member for 25 years and as the Museum Director for 20 years, serving at the museum for 30 years. Alice was a very sweet lady, she was always there for you. She will be greatly missed, but lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
