Alice Lydia Gruhot, 96, of Crookston, MN, passed away Friday evening, March 4, 2022, at the Benedictine Living Community Crookston with family by her side to comfort her.
Alice was born in Henderson, MN on January 14, 1926, a middle child of 16 born to the union of George Max and Anna (Stuedemann) Fries. Alice was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and graduated from Henderson High School. She then moved to Minneapolis where she worked for a few years before coming to Crookston. On November 27, 1945, Alice was united in marriage to John George Gruhot at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Their marriage would be blessed by the births of 8 children: Michael, JoAnn, Dianne, Mary Ann, Lorraine, Raymond, Angela, and Betty. After John’s passing on March 28, 1971, Alice moved to Burley, ID where she married Fred Dickson in 1977. Upon her return to Crookston Alice was employed as an aide at the Villa St. Vincent and then for the Sisters of St. Benedict at the Mount until her retirement.
Alice was a faithful member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish and the Ladies Axillary. She also enjoyed many years of volunteer service to the Foster Grandparent Program of Tri-Valley and was recognized for her longtime devotion to “her grandkids” and the program. She held a deep and abiding love for her children, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren. As an accomplished seamstress she made many outfits for her children while they were growing up. As an avid quilter she proudly made full size quilts for every one of her grand and great-grandchildren, and baby quilts for her great-grandchildren. Alice will be very lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her family and all who were touched by her life.
Alice is survived by her 4 living children: JoAnn Berger of Crookston, Dianne (Mike) Laniel of Robbinsdale, MN, Angela Thaemert of Crookston, and Betty (Curt) Jensrud of Hampton, MN; daughter-in-law, Monica Gruhot of Fosston, MN; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 12 great great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to her husbands, John Gruhot and Fred Dickson, Alice was preceded in death by her parents, George and Anna Fries; 4 children: Michael Gruhot, Raymond Gruhot, Mary Ann (Philip) Reep, and Lorraine Olson; grandson, Reese; great-grandson, Morgan; dear friend and companion, Myles Drellack and all of her siblings: Gilbert, Albert, Arthur, Marie, Anna, Ruben, Doretta, George, Hilda, Erwin, Helena, Raymond, Matilda, Loretta, and LaVehn.
