Allan Adolph Wigand, 77, of Crookston, MN, died Thursday, December 25, 2014, at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND after a brief illness. Allan was born in Crookston on May 12, 1937, the son of Adolph and Edythe (Saunders) Wigand, and was a graduate of Crookston Central High School. He enlisted in the Army National Guard in March of 1960 and served with Minnesota's 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry, for over 20 years. During his career with the Guard Allan was awarded the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the MN State Service Medal with 20 Year Clasp, the M16 Sharpshooter Badge, and the 81 mm Mortar Expert Badge. He received his honorable discharge, with the rank of MSGT, on September 1, 1981. In civilian life Allan was the Minnesota sales representative for the Cutler-Magner Salt Company for over 30 years, until his retirement in 2002. He was united in marriage to Emilee Anderson at Crookston and from their union 3 sons were born: Allan Jr. who died at the age of 5 days on November 23, 1958, Wesley, and Erick. Allan was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, and also held memberships in the Crookston VFW and American Legion Posts. He was also a longtime member and past-president of Eagles Aerie 873. Several years ago Allan helped found the Crookston Gun Club and was a past-president of that organization. Over the years he won several awards for his expert marksmanship at trap shooting events around the area. Allan will be very sadly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his soul-mate of 22 years, Lorraine VanderWeg of Crookston, MN; sons, Wesley of Moorhead, MN and Erick of Bemidji, MN; a granddaughter, Brittney; sister, Sandra Skornicka of Crookston; niece, Laura Haversfield and her family; and Lorraine's children: Carolyn (James) Taylor of Hartland, WI, Lee O'Malley of South Milwaukee, WI, Laurie Wozniak of Columbia, SC, Michael VanderWeg of South Milwaukee, and Nancy (Larry) Bores of Milwaukee, WI; and other relatives. In addition to his infant son, Allan Jr., he was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Edythe; a brother-in-law, Edward Skornicka; Lorraine's son-in-law, Lt. Col. Arthur Wozniak, and son, Peter VanderWeg, who was killed in action in Viet Nam. May God bless Allan's memory.
The funeral service for Allan Adolph Wigand will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Crookston with The Rev. Michelle Miller, officiating. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the service. Military Honors will be provided by the Crookston Veterans Council and the Minnesota National Guard Honors Unit, Moorhead, MN. Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston, in the spring. Online registry:
