Arlene Severson, 99, of Crookston, MN, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 1, 2012, at the Riverview Care Center in Crookston. Arlene was born to Andrew and Pearl (Van Der Werff) DeYoung on October 15, 1912 in Mount Vernon, SD. She attended school in Platte, SD until moving to Eldred, MN with her family in 1921. Arlene was employed at the New York Store in Crookston for twenty years, and continued to make her home with her parents. During World War II, she moved to Compton, CA where she was employed at Velte Aircraft. Upon returning home, Arlene was united in marriage to Willie Severson on November 10, 1950 in Crookston. In 1965 she began employment with Dahlgren & Company, retiring in 1985. Arlene's beloved husband, Willie, passed away on May 10, 1974. Arlene was a longtime member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Crookston. Arlene is survived by two second-cousins, Catherine Andring (Scott Storbakken) of Dilworth, MN and Scott (Jean) Tollefson of Beltrami, MN; and a niece, Pearl Ras of Morris, MN. In addition to her husband, Willie, Arlene is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Pearl DeYoung; brother, Alfred DeYoung who was killed in action while serving in Africa during WWII; and a sister and brother-in-law, Sadie and Henry Ras. A funeral service celebrating the life of Arlene Severson will be held Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston with The Rev. Jo Gast, officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place in Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston.
