Beatrice Irene (Urness) Smith, 91, of Crookston, MN, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday evening May 18, 2016 at the Villa St. Vincent. The funeral service for Bea Smith will be held on Saturday June 4, at 1:00 pm with visitation 1 hour before the service at the Evangelical Covenant Church, Crookston, MN. Burial will take place in the Hafslo Cemetery of rural Crookston, MN. Visitation will be on Friday June 3, from 5 to 7 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm at Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, MN. Bea was born on the family farm in rural Crookston, MN on March 15, 1925, the daughter of Henry and Lottie (Solie) Urness. Bea was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Faith at the Hafslo Lutheran Church. She grew up in rural Crookston and attended District 75 country school and graduated from 8th grade in 1939. On December 22, 1941, Bea was united in marriage to Daniel R. Smith of Blackduck, MN at the Hafslo Church parsonage in Crookston. Dan and Bea made their home in Crookston where they were devoted members of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Bea was involved with the Covenant Women's Prayer Knitting Group, Covenant Women's Ministries, and received special recognition and honors for her long time service. Bea was employed at the Minnesota Bean and Pea Co. from 1958 to 1969. She was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family, gardening and canning, and was well known for her baking around town. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, knitting, and belonging to a knitting club. Bea read and studied her Bible daily and prayed for her family and friends.
Following the death of her husband Dan on May 22, 1996, she remained in her home on Riverside Ave caring for her garden and flowers. Bea became a resident of The Summit Assisted Living in 2007 and The Villa St. Vincent in 2015. Bea is survived by her children Janice (Ken) Michalicek of Blackduck, MN, Nancy (Jerry) Rude of Tacoma, WA, Vickie (Shane) Campbell of Prescott, AZ, Ronald (Beverly) Smith of Tacoma, WA, and Lori (Daniel) Johnshoy of Crookston, MN, and 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Eunice Sondrol of Crookston. Bea was preceded in death by a son Daniel Richard Smith, Jr, who died on August 1, 1946; her husband Dan, her parents, a brother Harold Urness, and a sister LuVerne Berglund. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the Evangelical Covenant Church building fund or the Hafslo Cemetery Fund.
