Charles Hoff

December 16, 1954 — April 1, 2014

Charles William Hoff, 59, of rural Crookston, MN, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, April 1, 2014, of natural causes while at work in the shop at MNDOT headquarters in Crookston where he had been employed since 1988. Charles was born on December 16, 1954 in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Ernest George Hoff and Eunice (Nieness) Hoff. Following the death of his father when he was 10 years old, Charles and his family lived in other area communities before settling in Middle River, MN, where he graduated from Middle River High School. Charles then took courses in carpentry at the Thief River Falls AVTI and began working in construction. In 1982 he enlisted in the US Army National Guard and proudly served for 21 years, retiring in 2003. On August 18, 1984 Charles was united in marriage to Wendy Meyer at Argusville, ND. At that time he was working for the American Crystal Sugar Company in Hillsboro, ND, and the couple made their home in Hillsboro. Over the next several years their marriage was blessed by the births of 3 children: Adam, Megan, and Toni. The family later moved to Crookston, Thief River Falls, and Crookston again. Charles began his employment with the Minnesota Department of Transportation in 1988 and had been with MNDOT as a highway technician to the present time. Charles was a longtime member of Crookston's Nels T. Wold American Legion Post #20, and the MNDOT Union. In the past he served as a local Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed doing art and crafting projects with his children when they were younger. Charles was a great husband and father, who will be very lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his family and many friends. May God bless his memory. Grateful to have shared in Charles' life is his beloved wife of 29 years, Wendy; their 3 children: Adam, a student at UMC in Crookston, Megan of Crookston, and Toni, at home; a granddaughter, Elliona Angel May; 2 brothers, Tim (Kay) Hoff of Cummings, ND and Tom (Joy) Hoff of Minot, ND; a sister, Carolyn Johnson of Middle River, MN; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Eunice; brother-in-law, Delmar Johnson; and parents-in-law, Kenneth and Sally Meyer.
