Daryl Everett Schumacher, born February 4, 1949, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025, at the age of 75, surrounded by his loving family.
Daryl was born to parents Everett and Helen (Stellon) Schumacher.
Daryl spent his early childhood in Drayton, ND, and at the age of four Daryl and his family moved to rural Trail, MN. As a boy, Daryl helped on the family’s dairy farm. While attending school Daryl worked part-time as a mechanic for Earl Swenson in Oklee MN. During his high school years, one spring the Lost River Bridge was out due to ice jams, and Daryl couldn’t make it home. He stayed at the Person farm, where he helped with the chores—and it was here that he fell madly in love.
Daryl graduated from Oklee Public School in 1967.
On August 19, 1967, Daryl married the love of his life, Margaret (Peggy) Person, at Valle Lutheran Church in Oklee MN. Together, they built a life in Crookston, MN, and were blessed with three children: John, Chad, and Kari.
Daryl was a man of many talents. He worked in several roles over the years, including Detroiter in Red Lake Falls building mobile homes, a mechanic at International, Arctic Cat, and Salem Motors, and operated the Standard Station in Crookston from 1974 to 1979. In 1982, Daryl opened Schumacher’s Car Care—home of the cleanest shop in town, where he continued to do what he loved. Daryl had a work ethic that left no space for anything less than perfection. From his hair to his tools, everything had its place. He was often heard saying, “If you catch yourself saying ‘that’s good enough’, it probably isn’t.” Daryl took pride in doing things the “right way.” Daryl wasn’t always a man of many words, but he would give you an honest opinion—even if you didn’t want to hear it.
Whether driving down the highway or rolling through town, Daryl had one speed, and that speed was 50 mph. Daryl’s red pickup could be seen, and heard, from blocks away as he made his daily rounds. Being a creature of habit, Daryl was a regular customer at RBJ’s restaurant. There he could be found sipping his coffee, eating a burger, and doing what he enjoyed—visiting. Daryl would often talk about the importance of seeing the bright side of things, to not take yourself too seriously. Daryl was a man of strong faith, attending Grace Lutheran Church in Crookston. Known as a man of great kindness, Daryl was always willing to help anyone in need. Daryl held a special place in his heart for those struggling with addiction, Daryl would always remind people to keep their faith in God.
In 2011 Daryl suffered a stroke that threatened to change his life. He worked tirelessly to be able to drive again, and sure enough, he did. His determination and strong will to regain his independence were unmatched.
Over the years, Daryl spent countless hours hunting deer in the woods of Trail, MN. In the winter, he could often be found riding his snowmobile, embracing the cold with the same joy he brought to everything he did. In the summer, Daryl loved fishing on Pine Lake and always looked forward to his annual trip to Canada with friends. He also cherished the time spent with his brothers on their trips to Lake Texoma. When he wasn’t outdoors, Daryl enjoyed relaxing in his recliner watching his favorite TV shows, Walker Texas Ranger, Crocodile Dundee, or a classic Western. Among all the things Daryl enjoyed, his favorite was dancing with Peggy. Their love in those moments changed the energy around them. Daryl’s love for Peggy was evident to all who knew him, and his admiration for her continued until his very last days.
Whether you knew Daryl as the King of Carburetors, Doc or Dad, one thing was certain, Daryl loved his family. Even while bravely battling his illness, Daryl didn’t want to bring his loved ones any sadness. He continued, until the very end, to be a man of great strength and comfort.
Daryl leaves behind a legacy of kindness, love, and generosity. His life was a testament to the importance of family, hard work, and making the most of every moment. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the lessons taught, and the love he gave.
Daryl is survived by his wife Peggy Schumacher of Crookston MN, Children John (Rita) Schumacher of Crookston MN, Chad (Amy Graham) Schumacher of River Falls WI, and Kari (Dusty Howlett) Schumacher of Crookston MN.
