David Johnson

David Allen Johnson, 61, of Crookston, MN, died at his home peacefully of natural causes on November 15, 2013. David was born in Crookston on November 20, 1951, and was the son of Reuben and Luverne (Urness) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended Crookston schools, graduating from Central High School in 1971. A few weeks later on July 23rd David enlisted in the US Navy. He served as a cook aboard the USS Roosevelt as it sailed the Pacific, and was awarded the National Defense Medal for his service to his country. David was honorably discharged on July 18, 1975 and returned to Crookston. He continued his service as a member of the Naval Reserve until July of 1977. From 1975 until 1987 he was employed by the American Crystal Sugar Company in Crookston. He then spent two years working at the M & H Gas Station, while also doing seasonal work for the Crookston Park and Rec Department. From 1991 through 1997 David was employed at Grove Heating, before becoming custodian at the VFW and IC Muggs. He retired in 2000. For the past several years he had been doing maintenance and yard work for his good friend, Willie Nephew. David was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and VFW Post 1902. He enjoyed traveling; visits with his sister, Eileen, and her family; and spending time tending his flower garden and yard. He was the first to lend a hand to his neighbors whenever help was needed, and will be very sadly missed by those who shared in his life Loving family members include David's four siblings: Dennis (Sandy) Johnson of Mesquite, TX, Donny Johnson, Eileen (Jim) Langlois, and Rick Johnson, all of Crookston, MN; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a very good friend, Jan Charchenko of Crookston. He was very recently preceded in death by his sister, Bonnie Johnson, who passed away at Aurora, CO on November 11th, 2013; his parents, Reuben and Luverne; and a half-sister and two half-brothers, Sonny Ostgard, Darrell Ostgard, and Linda "Lindy" Engebretson. May God bless David's memory. A memorial service for David Johnson will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 22, 2013, at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston, MN. Visitation with David's family will be for one hour prior to the funeral. Military Honors will be accorded by the Crookston Veterans Council and inurnment will take place in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
