David Alyn "Toby" Solberg, age 73, of Crookston, MN, died unexpectedly of natural causes Monday evening, September 9, 2013, at RiverView Health in Crookston. Toby was born on June 19, 1940, on the rural Erskine, MN farm of his parents, Edward and Mabel (Martin) Solberg. He was baptized at home and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine. Toby received his education in the Erskine public schools and graduated from high school in 1958. For a number of years he was employed in the woodworking shop of the Eickhof Construction Company in Crookston. On September 1, 1973 Toby was united in marriage to Mary Gainor at Crookston's Trinity Lutheran Church. He began working in the Plant Services Department of the University of Minnesota-Crookston in 1974. He was in charge of the University's telecommunications system at the time of his retirement in 2005. In semi-retirement Toby worked at the Fisher's Landing Rest Stop on Highway 2, near Fisher, currently serving as the supervisor of the facility. He was also a driver for Rural Transportation in Crookston, seeing to it that people in need of medical care and treatment made it to their appointments. Toby enjoyed doing yard work, and the grounds around his home were proof of just how meticulous he was when doing something he loved. In his younger years he was an avid bowler and golfer, and usually carried the highest average in most of the leagues he bowled in. Toby had a lifelong love for animals and had served for many years on the Board of Directors of Crookston's Humane Society. He will be very lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends, including his two four-legged pals, Kip and Spotty, who will now be in Mary's loving care. Toby is survived by his former wife and best friend, Mary Solberg of Crookston; and his brothers and sisters: Emogene Solberg of Erskine, MN, Jerry (Maxine) Solberg of Beaver City, NE, Joan (Dave) Vick of Watertown, SD, Ruth (John) Stimpert of Devils Lake, ND, Rita (Sheldon) Trandem and Bruce Solberg of Erskine, and Lanny (Paula) Martin of Pembina, ND. He also leaves 7 nieces and nephews: Steve Skoglund, Tracie Potter, Michael Vick, Mark Vick, Sheri Altepeter, Scott Trandem, and Susan Burgan; several great and great-great nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mabel; a sister, JoAnn, who died at the age of 5; and a niece, Marie Vick. May God bless Toby's memory.
