Doris Johanna Heuer, age 102, of Crookston, MN, died early Tuesday morning, December 10, 2013, at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston. Doris was born on January 11, 1911 in Crookston, the daughter of August and Hilda (Engstrom) Thurn, immigrants to the United States from Sweden in 1903. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, educated in Crookston public schools, and a graduate of Central High School. Doris continued to make her home in Crookston and was united in marriage to Harold Henrickson on April 4, 1937. That same year she began working in the Polk County Treasurer's Office in Crookston. Harold died on October 4, 1961. Doris later married John Fridfrinnson in Crookston in 1962. John passed away several years later. In 1969, after 29 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Polk County, Doris retired as Deputy Polk County Treasurer. On July 24, 1985 she was united in marriage to John A. Heuer in a ceremony that took place in Mercer, WI. John and Doris made their home in Crookston. Sadly, John died on November 9, 2004. Doris was a devoted member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and WELCA. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than 60 years, and for many years of the Nels T. Wold American Legion Post Auxiliary, the International War Veterans Alliance, and the EX-POW Organization together with her husband, John Heuer, who was a WWII POW. She was very civic-minded and served in the community as a Campfire Girls leader, member of the Humane Society, and was actively involved in the Guilds of Bethesda Hospital and RiverView Hospital. Over the years Doris knitted hundreds of baby caps for the babies born at the hospital, and also made countless scarves and mittens that were placed under the Hospital's Christmas tree every year for those in need. She received many honors from these organizations recognizing the generosity of her time and talents. Doris will be very lovingly remembered by her family including grand-nephews, Fred Mattila (Natalie) and family of Mounds View, MN, and John Mattila (Michelle) of Stacy, MN; grand nieces, Julie Mattila Vry (Walter) and family of Menagha, MN, and Debra Mattila Mann (Scott) and family of Sebeka, MN. She also leaves a niece, Geraldine Mae Hanson Thurn of Homestead, FL; grandniece, Nancy Carol Thurn Kitchens of Key Largo, FL, great-grand niece, Nicole Alexis Thorn of Portland, OR; and the Families of Harold Henrickson, John Fridfrinnson, and John Heuer.
