Doris Sweep

October 28, 1935 — October 7, 2014

Doris B. Sweep, age 78, of Crookston, MN, died early Tuesday afternoon, October 7, 2014, at RiverView Health in Crookston, comforted knowing that her family was at her side. Doris was born in Crookston on October 28, 1935, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Fontaine) Prudhomme. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gentilly, MN, attended a nearby country school, and high School at Mount St. Benedict in Crookston. She met her future husband, Richard John Sweep, through his good friend, who just happened to be her brother, Larry. She and Dick were united in marriage on June 21, 1958 at St. Peter's Catholic Church. To their union four children were born: Rick, Jodi, Jill, and Jaclyn. Dick and Doris purchased the Prudhomme family farm from Doris's parents, and made their home in Kertsonville Township, farming the land for forty-three years until retiring in 2001. Doris moved into Crookston soon after Dick's sudden passing on September 22, 2011. She was a devoted member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, where she volunteered many hours cleaning and beautifying the Church, while also serving for countless weddings and funerals. Doris's greatest joy was spoiling her grandchildren; making each feel that they were her "favorite." They all spent many nights lying on Grandma's bed with her, watching 'Animal Planet' and 'Cops' on television. Doris was well-known for the hearty meals she served and her delicious home-made caramel rolls. She loved to play cards and for many years she and Dick belonged to a card club with friends and neighbors. While a resident of the Nimens-Espegard Apartments she spent her time reading and feeding the birds, and enjoyed visiting with the many new friends she made there, and also at the Summit Apartments where she had recently moved. Doris's love, sense of humor, and uniqueness will be greatly missed, and her memory forever treasured by all who shared in her life.

Doris leaves her four children, Rick Sweep and his wife, Jane, of Bemidji, MN, Jodi Clauson and her husband, Tom, of Crookston, MN, Jill Ford and her husband, Mike, of Hawley, MN, and Jaclyn Brekken of Crookston and her fiancé, Dale Umlauf, of Underwood, MN; eight grandchildren, Hannah and Jordan Sweep of Bemidji, Andrea and Alex Clauson of Crookston, Jack and Jada Ford of Hawley, and Elliot and Danica Brekken of Crookston; two sisters, Florence Dufault of Crookston and Dorothy LaCoursiere of Milwaukee, WI; brother, Hilaire Prudhomme and his wife, Jean, of Milwaukee; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to Richard, her beloved husband of fifty-three years, Doris was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters: Cecelia Prudhomme, Theresa Longtin, and Madeline St. Michel; and three brothers, Leonard, Paul, and Larry. May God richly bless the memory of Doris Sweep. "You can do whatever you want, you're at Grandma's!"
