Dorothy VonHoldt

March 1, 1929 — September 13, 2014

Dorothy Elaine VonHoldt, 85, of Crookston, Minnesota, passed away at her residence on Saturday, September 13, 2014. Dorothy was born in Crookston on March 1, 1929 to Andrew and Bertha VonHoldt. As a child Dorothy grew up on her parents' farm in Beltrami, where she also attended Ashland School in District 253. She moved to Crookston during her adolescent years, and graduated from Central High School. In 1949, at the age of 20, Dorothy enlisted in the Women's Army Corp and was stationed at Fort Myer, Virginia. During that time she had several different assignments including working in the Signal Corps personnel office. She was later transferred to Arlington County, Virginia, where she had the great honor of working in the Pentagon. After Dorothy's honorable discharge she moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, and was employed at several different hospitals in the Twin Cities as a medical assistant and x-ray technician. After living there for a number of years Dorothy moved back to Crookston to be closer to her family. During this time she worked at Bethesda Hospital in Crookston, along with other hospitals in northern Minnesota. In her later years Dorothy moved to Fertile, Minnesota, where she spent much of her time with her Mom. She enjoyed being employed as a library assistant there, while also using her talents for crafts as the secretary in a local craft shop. Eventually Dorothy returned to Crookston where she spent the remainder of her years. Dorothy favorite pastimes included reading, crafting with her many dear friends, and gardening. She was a true Minnesota sports fan, cheering for the Twins as well as the Vikings. Win or lose Dorothy remained a loyal fan. She displayed this same sense of loyalty in every area of her life, whether it be her family, her career, or her country. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Bertha VonHoldt; brother, George Henry VonHoldt; and her grandparents. She is survived by her brother Alvin (Evelyn) VonHoldt; sister-in-law Betty VonHoldt; and nieces and nephews: Nancy VonHoldt, Perry VonHoldt, Bruce VonHoldt, and Lori Karppinen. The funeral service celebrating the life of Dorothy Von Holdt will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 18, 2014, at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston with The Rev. Bill Reck, officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Hafslo Cemetery, rural Crookston, following the service. Online Registry:
