Elaine N. Eichhorst, age 77, Hillsboro, ND, died Friday, January 31, 2014 at Sanford Hospital in Hillsboro. Elaine was born on February 23, 1936 at St. Michael's Hospital in Grand Forks, daughter of Walter and Alyce (Kleven) Eichhorst. Her early years were spent in Grand Forks, the family moved to Larimore, ND, where her mother taught country school. Her mother met and married Alvin Suldahl and the family moved to a farm near Eldred, where Elaine attended a two story country school. She attended high school in Climax and following graduation attended Mayville State College for two years and then got her degree going to summer school at Moorhead State College. She taught first grade at Park River for a year and then at Fertile for three years. She attended fall semester at Moorhead State College and began teaching second grade in Little Falls, MN in January at the Charles E. Lindbergh School. Elaine loved teaching, but following a harsh winter, set her sights on California and applied to teach on the Monterey Peninsula and started teaching there in the fall of 1962. She continued to teach first grade for thirty three more years in California and enjoyed traveling up and down the West Coast and to Chicago, where cousins lived and showed her their beautiful town, including the zoo, museums, concerts and plays. Elaine enjoyed church music choirs, biking, skiing, skating and bowling. She also worked with the Hospital Auxiliary, the Monterey Choral Society and the Monterey Symphony. Following retirement, she joined the Friends of the Monarch Butterfly and served on their board of directors and as an art docent in the park. She also had served on the Board of California Retired Teachers in Monterey County as public relations chairman and on the Board of the Monterey County Democratic Club as events chairman. She moved to Hillsboro, ND, in October of 2012 after spending fifty years in California. Elaine is survived by her sister: Karen Suldahl of Climax, MN; nieces: Val (Ray) Uffman of Wayland, Michigan and Pam (Joel) Bishop of Wyoming, Michigan: great- nieces: Sarah and Susan; great-nephew: Kyle; 2 great great nieces and 2 great great nephews. She was preceded in death by her father: Walter Eichhorst; her mother: Alyce Suldahl; step-father: Alvin Suldahl; her sister: Marlene Hopewell, died in July of 2013 and a nephew: Stephen Hopewell.
