Fred Gebhardt

July 21, 1917 — October 2, 2013

Fred G. "Freddie" Gebhardt, age 96, of Crookston, MN, died early Wednesday morning, October 2, 2013, at RiverView Health in Crookston. Freddie was born in Euclid Township of Polk County, near Euclid, MN, on July 21, 1917, the son of Henry George and Nettie Mary (Kosanda) Gebhardt. After the death of his mother when he was six years old, Fred went to live with his uncle and aunt, Alec and Lizzie Kosanda, who lived near East Grand Forks, MN. Freddie attended country school and then worked on their farm. As a young man he met the love of his life, Henrietta Elizabeth Horejsi, and the two were united in marriage on March 19, 1940. They moved to rural East Grand Forks and later to Euclid, where they worked together on the farm. During the winter months Freddie worked for American Crystal Sugar Plant in Crookston. Freddie and Henrietta were later employed by Arctic Cat in Thief River Falls, MN until the plant closed for a time. In 2004 they moved into Crookston. Freddie became a resident of Villa St. Vincent in June of 2011. Sadly, Henrietta passed away on December 28, 2011. Freddie was a devoted and active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Euclid. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, whether in summer or on the ice in winter. He truly liked cutting and splitting firewood, used to heat their home, and continued with this very strenuous activity until he was well into his eighties. Freddie claimed it kept him in shape. He will be very sadly missed. Freddie is survived by his two children, Kenneth Gebhardt and Barbara McWaters, both of Crookston; two grandchildren, Brian (Kelly) McWaters of Wahpeton, ND and Tom McWaters of Crookston; a great-grandson, Ian McWaters of Wahpeton; two sisters-in-law, Mathilda "Tillie" Gebhardt of Crookston, and Rose Marie Hamann of Langdon, ND; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to his wife, Henrietta, Freddie was preceded in death by his parents and step-parents; and five brothers: Henry "Butch", Lawrence, Charles, Walter, and infant brother, Adam. May God bless Freddie's memory. A prayer service for Freddie Gebhardt will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, October 12, 2013, at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston with the Rev. Steve Bohler, officiating. Visitation with the family will be for one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in the Prairie View Cemetery, rural Euclid, MN, at a later date.
