George Hanson Jr, age 83, of Crookston, MN, died unexpectedly at his home early Saturday morning, September 20, 2014, with his wife, Nancy, at his side. George was born at Fisher, MN on January 11, 1931, one of five children of the union of George and Mabel (Strande) Hanson. He grew up on the family farm in Fairfax Township, near Crookston, attended country school, and graduated from Crookston Central High School. George entered the US Army and served in Korea during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge from the service he returned home and began farming with his brothers, first with Gil and Orlie, and later with Orlie. On January 25, 1958 George was united in marriage to Nancy Kiewel at Las Vegas, NV. George and Nancy made their home on their Fairfax Township farm until moving into Crookston in the early 1960's. They moved back to a new home they built on the farmstead in 1975. Son, Mike, joined George in the farming operation in 1981. After his retirement in 1997, George and Nancy moved back into Crookston. He continued to be part of what was taking place throughout the seasons with the crops and had been out in a tractor as recently as five days before his passing. George was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 20, VFW Post 1902, and Eagles Aerie 873. He was also a longtime member of the Farm Bureau, and the Red River Valley Sugar Beet Growers' Association. In younger years favorite pastimes included fishing and hunting with family and friends. George was proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and loved the close personal relationships he and Nancy enjoyed with them. He was a special man who will be missed by all.
