George Walter Meyer, 84, of Crookston, MN, died early Wednesday morning, September 14, 2016, at the Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. George was born in Crookston on February 5, 1932, one of six children of the union of Johann Theodor and Marie (deWall) Meyer. He grew up on the family farm in Fairfax Township and was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran in Crookston. George first attended a nearby country school, and went on to graduate from Crookston's Central High School in 1949. He began his farming career while still in high school, receiving his first government allotment to raise sugar beets in 1947. George entered the U.S. Army on February 24, 1953 and served in Germany with the Medical Corps, 39th Infantry, 9th Regiment. Prior to his honorable discharge on February 18, 1955 he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. George then returned to the farm and resumed his farming career. On April 20, 1958 he was united in marriage to Glorene Marie Kuehl at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. The couple made a very loving home on their farm in Fairfax Township, and together raised five children: Cindy, David, Jon, Robert, and Lisa. In 1997 George proudly turned the farm over to his sons, David and Jon, but continued to remain actively involved in its operation to the present. The kids would all say that he "officially" retired when he drew his last breath. Glorene passed away on April 30, 2011, and the family finds great comfort in knowing that she and George are together again. George was a devoted, lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He was past-chairman of the Board of Trustees, served as a Board member for many terms, and was an usher for several years. George served as an advisor on the local board of Midland Cooperative from 1962 – 1979, and was instrumental in the founding of Crookston Valley Cooperative where he served primarily as board secretary from 1979 - 1996. He was the Supervisor of the Fairfax Town Board for many years as well. George was extremely proud of the award he and his family received from the American Crystal Sugar Company and the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Grower's Association, recognizing the Meyer family as 50-year sugar beet growers. He enjoyed the years he spent bowling with the Wednesday night men's league, and was a longtime member of Nels T. Wold American Legion Post #20.
George will always be remembered for his diligence, accuracy, precision, and LOVE when it came to anything he did – whether it was farming, woodworking, gardening, or making the holiday fudge. George made countless pans of fudge for RiverView Auxiliary's annual Cookie Walk, for his friends, and at least one Christmas tin for each of his kids and grandkids every year. George will be very lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his family and many friends. George leaves five children: Cindy Grandbois of Fargo, ND, David (Judith) Meyer and Jon (Siri) Meyer, of Crookston, MN, Robert (Kristi) Meyer of Detroit Lakes, MN, and Lisa Meyer of Crookston; and nine grandchildren: Elliott Meyer (Jessica Primus) of Crookston, Emily (James) Brue of Ada, MN, Evan Meyer of Crookston (Courtney M. Anderson of Roseville, MN,) Easton Meyer of Crookston, Alexandra Meyer, Anthony Meyer, and Amy Grandbois of Fargo, ND, and Eliza Meyer and Clara Meyer of Crookston. Also surviving are two sisters, Harriet (Lloyd) Wagner of Fisher, MN and Dorothy Beiswenger of Crookston; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to Glorene, his beloved wife of fifty-three years, George is preceded in death by his parents, Johann and Marie; brother, Henry (Norma) Meyer; sisters, Johanna (John) Koolstra and Martha Carter; brother-in-law, Ed Beiswenger; father-in-law, Earl Kuehl; mother-in-law, Eliza Kuehl Weiss, step father-in-law, Eldo Weiss; and sister-in-law, Ardyce (Walter) Cymbaluk. May God richly bless George's memory.
