Gerald Lee "Jerry" Burke, age 89, of Crookston Minnesota passed away at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks North Dakota on February 26, 2016.
He was born on September 3, 1926 in Crookston Minnesota to Henry and Mamie (Lien) Burke. As Gerald's mother passed away when he was only 11 months, he was raised by his sister Doris and her husband Veral Gibbons. He attended the Northwest School of Agriculture and graduated in 1944.He was united in marriage to Alice Acker on January 25, 1948, in Crookston. To this union four children were born. After 42 years, sadly, Alice passed away. Gerald was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Crookston where he was baptized, confirmed, married, and served as the Sunday School Superintendent. He taught Sunday school, was on the Church Board of Directors several times serving as the Chairman in 1986 & 1987. He was also a member of the Lutheran Layman's League. He was a former member of the Men's Club in which he held office, and he was one of the founders of the Mid-West Winter Shows where held the chairmanship for 2 years, along with serving as president of the Crookston Conservation Club, and a member of the Crookston Car Club.
Gerald's true love was farming and farmed in Andover Township until 1968 when he retired from farming because of health issues. He then became consignee for Mobil Oil Bulk Plant in Crookston and later managing Mobil Oil until he retired. Gerald married Doreen Sewill in 1992 and was able to spend many winters in the south until her death. Preceding Gerald in death were his parents; his wives, Alice and Doreen; sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Veral Gibbons; brother and sister-in-law, James and Iris Burke; and infant twin brothers. Loving survivors include his children, Linda (Dave) Goosen, Crookston, Minnesota, Keith (Anne) Burke, Climax, Minnesota, Marcia (Larry) Bombardier, Crookston, Minnesota, and Leann (Terry) Clemenson, Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Michelle (Eric) Hofmeisler, Bryant Gramer, Tracy (Alex )Welk, Alyssa Burke(Pat Crawford), Chris Burke, Misty Lemke, Justin Bombardier, Eric Clemenson (Shelly Bugay), Cameron (Amber) Clemenson, Kaitlyn (Eric) Clemenson; 18 great- grandchildren; nieces, Colene (Francis) DeBoer, Susan Gibbons, Eilene Burke; and special friend Clara Johnson. Gerald will be missed by all his family and many close friends especially at Nimen's Espegaard. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Crookston. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church Tuesday. Burial will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston, MN.
