Gilbert Henry Weber, age 90, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, March 26, 2018, at Riverview Care Center. Gilbert was born to Henry and Elsie (Goosmann) Weber in Wood County, WI on July 29, 1927. In 1929, the family moved to rural Crookston, finally settling in Fairfax Township. There, he attended rural school through the 8th Grade and finished his formal education at the Northwest School of Agriculture.
On November 18, 1949, he was united in marriage to Esther Sylvia Steinbrink at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN. To this union were born four children: Carol, Daniel, David, and Kevin. Gilbert and Esther lived in Crookston for two years (where he drove taxi in the winters with many tales to share) before moving back to the family farm to work alongside his father. Gilbert farmed until his retirement in 1993; although as a true farmer at heart, he never left the land. In 1994, Gilbert and Esther then moved to Crookston.
Gilbert was a life-long member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Crookston, MN, where he was a Sunday School Teacher for many years and served several terms on the Church Board, assisting in the building of the Day School. Gilbert also served on the Fairfax Township Board, Crookston Grain Company Board of Directors, Red Lake Water Shed Advisory Committee, and the FHA County Board.
Gilbert was honored by DeKalb Seed Company as Sunflower Producer of the Year in 1984. Gilbert enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and grandkids. The “Coffee Guys” at RBJ’s provided an opportunity to spend time with “old” treasured friends and a chance to “shake the dice” for mere quarters! Working with wood—making many gifts for family and friends and completing beautiful cabinets for their home— was a true “labor of love.”
Gilbert is survived by his children: Carol Weber of Crookston, MN; Daniel and Carolyn (Pokrzywinski) Weber of Thief River Falls, MN; David Weber and Kevin Weber of Crookston, MN; grandchildren: Olivia (Kyle) Myers of Grand Forks, ND; Joshua Weber of Aberdeen, SD; Mollie (Arty) Mashburn of Grand Forks, ND; Maggie Rudnik of Crookston, MN; Meredith (Ryan) Cianchini of Fargo, ND; and 11 great-grandchildren. Gilbert is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Gilbert was preceded in death by Esther, his wife of 60 years; parents Henry and Elsie Weber; parents-in-law Paul and Judith Steinbrink; brothers and sisters-in-law: Ervin (Dorothy), Harold (Anne), Arthur (Mildred), and sister Eleanore Swift; in-laws: Hazel (Lloyd) Hoiseth; Kermit, Roy, Orval, Avis Steinbrink, Ralph (Laverne) Steinbrink; nieces and nephews: Cheryl Wehrly, Kay Goosen, Jerry Hoiseth, Linda Hoiseth, and Keith Weber; and great-grandson, Max Mashburn.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff of the Riverview Care Center and Red River Valley Hospice who so graciously and lovingly cared for Gilbert.
