Gladys McCauley

January 15, 1921 — October 20, 2014

Gladys Bernadine McCauley, age 93, of Crookston, MN, died peacefully Monday morning, October 20, 2014, at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston with her daughter, Janice, and son, Dennis, at her side. Gladys was born on January 15, 1921, on the farm of her parents, Ben and Olive (Bendelow) Eagleson, near Union, North Dakota. She grew up on the farm, attended grade school in Union, and high school at nearby Milton, ND. As a teenager Gladys did light housekeeping for several neighboring families. On October 5, 1938 she was united in marriage to Juel R. McCauley at the First Presbyterian Church in Crookston. The couple moved to Portland, OR where he worked in the shipyards in support of the WWII defense effort. They returned to the area in 1944 and Juel began his career at Park River, ND as a grain buyer and elevator manager with Harvest States. He was later transferred to Angus, MN, and in 1961 he, Gladys, and the kids moved to Crookston. Juel continued to make the commute to Angus. With the kids getting older, Gladys began working at Eagle Drug, retiring from there after 21 years. Retirement meant more time to enjoy her home and growing family. Gladys loved spending time working in her yard and garden. One of her favorite pastimes was canning: jams, jellies, and watermelon pickles, and generously sharing her bounty with family and friends. In the evenings she liked to do craft work while sitting and visiting with Juel. Sadly, he passed away on December 2, 2002. Gladys was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church and Esther Ruth Circle, and also held memberships in the Red Hatters and Eagles Aerie Auxiliary. She was a tireless volunteer at the Golden Link Senior Citizens Center; generous of her time and talents, and always looking forward to visiting with friends. Gladys will be remembered by her family for her love, humor, and the way she made each of them feel very special. Grateful to have shared in her life are her two children, Janice Johnson of McGregor, MN and Dennis (Darlene) McCauley of Thief River Falls, MN; five grandchildren: Terry (Sharon) Johnson of Champlin, MN, Scott (Julie) Johnson of Maple Grove, MN, Renee (Brian) Rautio of Cambridge, MN, Amber (Jamie) Wark of Fargo, ND, and Kimberly (Jordan) Graff of Forest Lake, MN; eight great-grandchildren: Ashley, Briana, Caitlyn, and Delaney Johnson, Cassandra Rautio, twins-Max and Alex Johnson, and Amalya Graff; sister-in-law, Joyce Eagleson of Renton, WA; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to Juel, her beloved husband of sixty-four years, Gladys was preceded in death by a son, Terrance Wayne McCauley, who died in 1956; her parents, Ben and Olive Eagleson; brother, Glen Eagleson; and sisters: Joyce Fisher, Alice Hall, and Donna Flack. May God bless the memory of Gladys Bernadine McCauley.
