Glenn R. Newhouse, age 87, of Crookston, MN, died on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, MN. Glenn Raymond Newhouse was born on November 19, 1925 in Fairfax Township, Polk County, MN, son of Willie and Grace (Avery) Newhouse. He was baptized, confirmed and attended Sunday School at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Glenn attended country school at District 288 south of Crookston. Glenn grew up on the family farm and started working very young for Verl Gibbons for a number of years. In 1944, he entered the US Navy and was stationed at the Great Lakes, after completing training, he was sent to New York and then on to England and France on the USS Melville ship. Glenn was Honorably Discharged on June 26, 1946 at Jacksonville, Florida, at which time he returned home to the family farm. On May 24, 1947, he was united in marriage to Lyla Larson, daughter of Martin and Rena (Johnsrud) Larson of Fertile, at the Concordia Lutheran Church. They settled in Crookston, where Glenn worked at Kelly Oil and the Mill, until the Mill burned down. In 1954, they moved to Hallock, where Glenn opened and ran a new Standard Oil Gas Station. After one year, he knew this was not his life's dream, so they returned to Crookston. He worked for Verl Gibbons again, until he bought his own farm south of Crookston in 1955. Glenn loved the farm, which he worked until health problems forced him to retire in 1989. They moved to Crookston, but again Glenn couldn't stay away from the farm, so he went to work for Curt Hoppe, until his health failed more. Glenn served several terms on the church board of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the Russia Township board. He was a lifelong member of the local American Legion and VFW. He grew up a member of the Kittson 4-H Club. He enjoyed those years bowling on the Farmers Bowling league and had great fun with his friends selling tickets at the Winter Shows every year. Glenn was always a hard worker and willing to help his neighbors if they needed it. Glenn enjoyed and loved his family and the many trips to see them in the winter months. he loved fishing, tinkering and just fixing things. He had a camper and a boat on Leech Lake for many years, where he met many great friends and spent countless hours fishing for walleyes. Loving family members include his wife: Lyla of 66 years; and four children: Patty (Joe) Melancon of St. Amant, LA, Ron (Linda) Newhouse of Hermiston, OR, Greg (Maxine) Newhouse of Crookston, and Tim Newhouse of Crookston; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and eighteen step-grandchildren; a sister: Ivah Drumheller of Grand Forks; a sister-in-law: Verna Newhouse of Grand Forks; and many nieces and nephews. Glenn is preceded in death by his parents: Willie and Grace Newhouse; brothers: Earl, Kenneth, Irvin and Harold Newhouse; and a sister: Luella Whitney. Glenn's funeral service will be held at 3 PM, Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Crookston, with Rev. Steven Bohler, officiating. Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston from 5-7 PM, Friday, July 26, 2013 with a prayer service at 7 PM, and also visitation at the church for one hour before the service on Saturday afternoon. Military honors will be provided by the Crookston Veterans Council. Interment will be at Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
