Hazel Engen

Hazel Engen, age 105, from Crookston, MN passed away on August 1, 2016 at Villa St. Vincent in Crookston with loving family members at her side. Hazel was born at Watertown, SD on April 15, 1911 to Charles and Laura (Baker) Johnson. She grew up in Watertown and graduated from the Watertown High School with the Class of 1930. She was united in marriage to Walter L. Engen on November 11, 1937 at Watertown. They first moved to Warren, MN, and then to Crookston in 1940. Together, the couple raised six children and Hazel was a loving wife, mom, and homemaker for a very busy household. Walter was employed as a millwright for the Crookston Milling Company and later worked on the construction of the American Crystal Sugar factory. For several years, until his retirement, he was a machinist at Crystal. Hazel enjoyed doing crafts, and raising African violets. She and Walter liked to travel, often attending area fiddle contests where he would play with great success. Walter passed away on September 29, 1990.

Hazel moved from her home to the Summit Apartments in March of 2006, and became a resident of the Villa on June 10, 2013. She was a longtime member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid, and also belonged to Homemakers' Club. Hazel was recently honored at the Villa by her family and friends as they celebrated her 105th birthday. Loving family members include her 6 children: Dennis (Rosie) Engen of Grand Forks, ND, Larry (Judeen) Engen of Karlstad, MN, Darwin (Helen) Engen of Spokane, WA, Linda Ness of St. George, UT, Irvin (Eva) Engen of Spokane, and Rick Engen of San Francisco, CA; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Walter, Hazel was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Harvey Ness; grandson, Jeffrey Engen; great grandson, Mark Renfandt; her parents, Charles and Laura; brothers , Chauncey (Lucille) Johnson and Harris (Ann) Johnson; and sister, Carrie Johnson. May God richly bless Hazel's memory. A Memorial Service for Hazel Engen will be held at 10:30am, Saturday, SEPTEMBER 17, 2016, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Crookston with The Rev. Steve Bohler, officiating. Visitation with the family will be at the church for one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be take place at the Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston.
