Henry Goodyke

March 27, 1918 — August 22, 2014

Henry Goodyke, 96, of Crookston, MN, died Friday afternoon, August 22, 2014, at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston. Henry was born on March 27, 1918 at Blendon, MI, the son of Richard and Hattie (Gebben) Goodyke. At the age of two his family moved to rural Crookston, where he grew up and attended country school. Henry started working on the family farm as a youngster, and loved to tell the story of moving cattle from south of Crookston, thru the City to the farm in Parnell Township, by himself at 9 years of age! On May 18, 1942 he enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. He was extremely proud of the fact that a man with only an 8th grade education was selected to be an instructor throughout most of service at the Army Gunnery School at Harlequin, TX. Having served for 4 years was a very important time in Henry's life and he kept in contact with many of his Army buddies throughout the years. Following his honorable discharge on January 19, 1946 he returned home. On May 23, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mayme H. Solheim. Henry and Mayme settled on a farm in Fanny Township, near Crookston, where they raised their three children: Richard, Dennis, and Nancie. Henry farmed in Parnell Township for many years with his brothers, Andrew, Anton and John, and from the early 1970's with his brother, John, and sons, Richard and Dennis. Even though he retired at age 65, he still kept a close eye on the farming operation of his sons. His red PT Cruiser could always be spotted traveling around the area checking their crops or headed to town for groceries. Winters were spent in McAllen, TX with Mayme until her passing on August 15, 1995. Henry continued going to McAllen until 2012. He loved being with his friends and showing his visitors around nearby Padre Island, where his service friends would spend time, and how much everything had changed since those days.

Henry remained on his homestead to the present time and was fiercely independent, with a 'little assistance' from his family. He never let the fact that he had difficulty getting around, without the use of a walker or his scooter, get him down. Rather, he focused on the fact that he could 'still get around'. He loved watching the birds, and saw to it that several birdhouses were put up outside his window. He also tended a large garden, which he would hoe by going alongside the rows of corn on his scooter, anxiously awaiting that first cob. Henry liked to tinker in his shop, and had bolts in his pocket to his last working day of August 17, 2014. He will be very lovingly remembered and sadly missed. Family members include his sons, daughter, and daughter-in-law: Richard and Kathy Goodyke and Dennis Goodyke, of Crookston, MN, and Nancie Goodyke of Brighton, CO; 3 grandchildren: Darren Goodyke of Crookston, Kelly Plummer (fiancé, James Mitchell) of Hankinson, ND, and Jaime (Russell) Delzer of Climax, MN; 3 great-grandchildren: Erica and Ian Plummer, and Katelyn Delzer, and a great-grandson soon to be born to Jaime and Russell. Henry also leaves a sister, Helen Michaelson of Crookston; sister-in-law, June Goodyke of Crookston; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other relatives. In addition to Mayme, his beloved wife of 49 years, Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Hattie; three brothers, Anton and his wife Clair, John, and Andrew; and a brother-in-law, Luvern Michaelson. May God bless Henry's memory.
