Henry E. Gredvig, age 95, of Edina, MN, and a former longtime Crookston, MN resident, died Thursday morning, October 16, 2014, at The Willows of Vernon Terrace in Edina. Henry was born to G.H. and Clara (Morvig) Gredvig on November 12, 1918 in Garfield Township, rural Fertile Minnesota. He grew up on the family farm and was a graduate of Fertile High School. Henry was a WWII veteran, having served with the US Army in the South Pacific. On December 31, 1945 he was united in marriage to Mernie Kaste at the Little Norway Lutheran Church near Fertile. Henry and Mernie lived in Chicago for a few months while Henry went to school and then came to Crookston in the fall of 1946 to make their home. He served as Polk County Assessor for twenty-seven years before retiring in 1984. Professionally, he was a two term president of the State Assessor's Association, and secretary of a seven state area Council of Assessors. Henry and Mernie enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family. Mernie passed away on May 27, 1999. As a proud contributor to the community of Crookston, Henry was active in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Crookston Lions Club, Polk County Historical Society, and the Boy Scouts. He served on the City Council for several years and devoted countless hours of service dedicated to the nurturing and promotion of the Crookston community. He was very proud of his Norwegian roots in the farming community of Fertile where he grew up, working and playing with his six sisters and five brothers. Henry celebrated his heritage as a longtime member of the Sons of Norway Morgensol Lodge in Crookston. Several years ago Henry moved to Edina, MN to be near his daughter, Karen, and her family. He delighted in the accomplishments of his granddaughters, Clara and Emma, and was generous in his support of their endeavors. At age 93 he began painting with an art therapist, and the scenes he painted were almost all those of his beloved Fertile, the Sand Hills, and Crookston. Special thanks are extended to the staff of The Willows of Vernon Terrace and Fairview Hospice for their kindness and care. Henry is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Douglas Boyum of Edina, MN; granddaughters, Clara and Emma Boyum of Minneapolis, MN; 2 brothers, Paul (Lorraine) and Arthur (Gelaine) Gredvig of Fertile, MN; 4 sisters-in-law, Marge Gredvig of San Diego, CA, Esther Wolf of Cottage Grove, MN, Marilyn Lecy of Red Wing, MN, and Gayle Kaste of Northport, WA; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to Mernie, his beloved wife of 54 years, Henry is preceded in death by his parents, G.H. and Clara Gredvig; 6 sisters: Alida (Cyrus) Sannes, Olava (Olaf) Christian, Hilma (Art) Rongen), Mildred (Philip) Kilpatrick, Mabel (Ralph) Sather, and Ida (Arnold) Erickson; and 3 brothers: Arnold, George (Clara), and Walter Gredvig. Henry was a kind, generous and wise man with a delightful sense of humor. Our memories of him are precious and blessed.
