Janet Hawkins

August 16, 1940 — September 4, 2014

Janet Eleanor Hawkins, 74, of Crookston, MN, died unexpectedly at her home Thursday morning, September 4, 2014, with her husband, Chuck, at her side. Jan was born on August 16, 1940 at Virden, Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Leslie and Elizabeth (McNab) Shoemaker. She grew up in Virden, graduated from high school there in 1958, and went on to receive a degree from the University of Manitoba. On July 16, 1960 Jan was united in marriage to Charles Nathan Hawkins at the Knox United Church in Virden. The couple made their home in Crookston all their married lives and were members of the First Presbyterian Church. Their marriage was blessed by the births of three children: Deborah, Richard, and Robert. During her first years in Crookston Jan was employed in the office of a local attorney. She later taught Sunday school while her kids were young. Once they were through elementary school she began employment with the American Crystal Sugar Company, serving as payroll coordinator from 1976 until her retirement on January 1, 1998. Jan was a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her family fondly remembers Jan as the person who was always there for them. No matter what was going on in her busy life she always had time for everyone. Just as she raised her children to be caring, loving, and respectful adults, she passed on these same attributes to each of her grandchildren. Special times together were spent playing cards and games, camping, fishing, four-wheeling, and taking family vacations that created a lifetime of lasting memories. Nothing meant more to Jan than Chuck and their family, and she will always remain in their hearts and be forever missed. Jan takes leave of Chuck, her beloved husband of 54 years; their 3 children and spouses: Deborah and William Solheim of Erskine, MN, Richard and Hazel Hawkins of Crookston, MN, and Robert and Terri Hawkins of Coon Rapids, MN; 8 grandchildren: Amber Solheim, Kent (April) Solheim, Ryan (Sarah) Hawkins, and Tyler, Sammie Jo, Jessica, Lisa, and Katelyn Hawkins; 2 great-grandchildren, Kyanna and Keegan Permann; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Helen Shoemaker of Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada; and many other relatives and friends. Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Les and Beth Shoemaker; grandson, Christopher Solheim; nephew, Todd Shoemaker; and parents-in-law, Vernon and Louise Hawkins. May God richly bless the memory of Janet Eleanor Hawkins. The funeral service celebrating the life of Janet Hawkins will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at the First Presbyterian Church in Crookston with The Rev. Darrel Cory, officiating.
