Joan Ness

January 22, 1937 — November 20, 2013

Joan Yvonne Ness, 76, of Fisher, MN, died early Wednesday morning, November 20, 2013, at RiverView Health in Crookston with her family at her side. Joan was born at Duluth, MN on January 22, 1937, and was the daughter of Sigurd and Olga (Jacobsen) Siversen. She was baptized at the Lakeside Bethany Lutheran Church, and was confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Duluth. She graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1955 and was active in the band (flute), marching band and choir. Joan attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth where she received an Associate Degree and Certification as an x-ray technologist. She then came to Crookston, MN to join the Crookston Clinic x-ray department and to train future technologists. On August 29, 1959 Joan was united in marriage to Jerome Ness, a Fisher area farmer. The ceremony took place at the First Lutheran Church in Duluth and was performed by her future brother-in-law, Pastor Orlin Ness. Joan and Jerome made their home on their farm in Roome Township, near Fisher. With the birth of her first child, Joan left the employ of the Clinic to look after her family. Being a "city girl" she learned the farm life quickly and without hesitation would pitch right in whenever help was needed. Joan could load beet trucks and drive farm equipment with the best of them. She was a faithful member of the Fisher Lutheran Church and WELCA, and participated in the quilting club of the church for several years. She also enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, crafting, and cross-stitching. Additionally, she held memberships in the Fisher Homemakers Club and the Farm Bureau. Joan was a very accomplished baker and won several Farm Bureau baking competitions at the county level, going on to participate at state competitions where she did quite well. Over the years Joan and Jerome took several wonderful trips with Farm Bureau friends, visiting Hawaii, Florida, California, Texas, and Missouri. They also experienced three memorable cruises to the Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Panama Canal. Joan was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who touched the lives and hearts of many. Joan is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Jerome; 3 sons and a daughter, 7 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild: Joel and Becky Ness of Fisher, MN and their children, Stephanie, Eric, and Sara; Janeen and Mike Swann of Prosper, ND, and their daughter, Megan (fiance', Brian Moser), and Megan's son, Treyton; Rick and Pam Ness of Thompson, ND, and their children, Jessica (Tyler) Kjemhus, and Hannah and Ryan; and Kyle Ness of Fisher. She also leaves a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Bill McGann of Duluth, MN; a niece and 3 nephews: Cindy, Nick, Brad, and Cooper; and many cousins and other relatives. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Barbara Jean; and brother-in-law, Pastor Orlin Ness. May God richly bless Joan's memory. A memorial service for Joan Yvonne Ness will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 7, 2013, at the Fisher Lutheran Church in Fisher, MN, with The Rev. Karen Young Trenne, officiating.
