John Schraeder

November 13, 1927 — May 26, 2015

It is with deep and heavy sadness that we announce the death of John Eugene "Buddy" Schraeder, who passed away on May 26, 2015 at The Villa in Crookston with loving family members by his side. Buddy was born in Crookston Minnesota on November 13, 1927 where he lived his entire life. When not plotting his next successful business deal, Bud also spent much of his free time escaping to the Lake of the Woods in search of the elusive walleye, striving to make that perfect golf shot down the fairway or cheering on his favorite sports teams. He was active all his life and always radiated a wonderful sense of humor and laughter that was contagious to anyone who knew him. Buddy played football and hockey for Cathedral High School, and graduated in 1947. He joined the US Army where he served as an Technician Fourth Grade stationed in Japan. Upon his return, he worked with his father and brother at JE Schraeder Auto Part store and later became co-owner of the auto part store as well as The Viking Bar and Lounge. Buddy continued to run both the auto part business and The Viking until they were sold to new owners in late 1990 and early 2000. John was also co-owner of Northern Paving and J&S Gravel as well as North Acres which resulted in key business developments in Crookston including the construction of Walmart. On January 14, 1950 Bud was united in marriage to Marlys Paulson at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston, MN. They settled into their home in Crookston and later welcomed son Ted and daughters, Linda, Jennifer and Marcia into their lives. Bud and Marlys enjoyed spending time at their Maple Lake home, near Mentor, MN, as well as their Bellaire home in Clearwater, FL and always looked forward to entertaining family and friends. Bud will long be remembered for his witty sense of humor, his unique way with words and generosity to his family, friends and community.

Buddy is survived by the love of his life, Marlys. Also surviving are son Ted Schraeder and wife Sue of Gentilly, MN and grandchildren Jason and Erin; daughter Linda Dickson and husband Dennis of Minnetonka, MN and grandchildren Katie and Lauren; daughter Jennifer Nelson and husband Todd of Land O' Lakes, FL and grandchildren Jake and Derek; and daughter Marcia Hoistad and husband Ron of Edina, MN and grandchildren Sarah and Tom. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Thelma Schraeder; two brothers: Gordy (Delores) Schraeder and Donald (Shirley) Schraeder. A Memorial Mass will be held at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 30, 2015, with visitation from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM. The Rev. Vincent Miller will preside.
