Joyce Olson

August 15, 1918 — February 24, 2015

Joyce Olson, age 96, of Crookston, MN, died peacefully Tuesday evening, February 24, 2015, at the RiverView Memory Care Center in Crookston, MN, with her family at her side. Joyce was born at Duluth, MN on August 15, 1918, the daughter of Victor E. and Agnes Cecelia (Johnson) Olson. She was baptized and confirmed at Asbury United Methodist Church and attended Duluth public schools, graduating from Denfeld High School in 1937. After attending Duluth Business College, Joyce began working at a bank in the city. There she met, was courted by, and later married a young man by the name of Odell H. Olson on June 22, 1941. Over the following years the loving couple would be blessed by the births of their four children: Richard, Gary, Gail, and Joydell. In 1943 the growing family moved to Bismarck, ND where Odell was a sales representative for Fargo Paint and Glass. In 1949 they moved to Crookston after purchasing Crookston Paint and Glass. Joyce and Odell worked side by side, with Joyce serving as business and office manager. In 1972 they sold the business to Roger, Jim, and Jerry Stainbrook, and Joyce became the secretary for the Wesley United Methodist Church. She and Odell were devoted members of the church, where Joyce was a past president of the Women's Society, later known as the United Methodist Women. She was also a longtime member of the Order of Eastern Star, and served as Guardian for Job's Daughters. Sadly, Odell passed away on November 27, 1984. Odell would later be joined in heaven by their sons, Richard Odell Olson and Gary Grant Olson. Joyce continued working in the church office until retiring in 1994. She enjoyed going for walks, and though she could drive, Joyce much preferred walking to wherever she needed to go. She enjoyed peaceful moments spent doing embroidery, and playing cards with Odell and their many friends. Joyce was a wonderful cook, and was even better when it came to baking. Her ginger cream cookies, were hands-down, the best that anyone had ever tasted. She enjoyed 'visiting' and took great joy in meeting and making new friends of all ages. On October 14, 2002 Joyce moved from her home to the RiverView Nursing Home, and in 2004 entered the memory care part of the RiverView Care Center. She absolutely loved each and every one of her caregivers, and they became extensions of her own family. Their love for her was just as evident. Joyce's family was very grateful for the many kindnesses shown to her, and for making her feel so loved and safe. She will be very sadly missed. Joyce takes leave of her two daughters, Gail Joyce Schultz of Crookston, and Joydell Alexander and her husband, Jim, of Lake Vermilion, near Cook, MN; chosen son, Ted Woolever and his wife, September, and their daughter, Jennem, of Grand Forks, ND; two daughters-in-law, Lynne Olson of Sanford, MI and Debra Olson of Minneapolis, MN; two granddaughters and their families: Abbie and Gene Totten of San Francisco, CA and their children, Amelia Dempsey Totten and Henry Grant Totten, and Amanda and Scott Aspenson of Edina, MN and their daughter, Elin Kay Aspenson; and several nieces, nephews, extended family, and her RiverView family. In addition to Odell, her beloved husband of 43 years, and sons, Richard and Gary, Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Agnes; son-in-law, Don Schultz; brother, Aubrey Victor Olson and his wife, Virginia; and niece, Ginnylee Appel. May God richly bless Joyce's memory. The funeral service for Joyce Olson will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Crookston with The Rev. Michelle Miller, officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service and interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston in the spring. Memorials may be given in Joyce's name to the RiverView Memory Care Center, 323 South Minnesota Street, Crookston, MN 56716 or the Wesley United Methodist Church, 701 Eickhof Blvd, Crookston.
