Julie Brouse

December 5, 1960 — May 17, 2014

Julie Ann Brouse, age 53, of Crookston, MN, died peacefully at her home early Saturday morning, May 17, 2014, comforted by having her loving family at her side. She had been dealing with cancer for the past two years with great grace and dignity, knowing always that with the support of her family, close friends, and caregivers she was never alone.

Julie was born on December 5, 1960 at Fairfield, IA, the daughter of Leonard and Bonnie (Carlton) Matthies. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and spent her early years growing up in Eldon, IA. When Julie was 9 years old her mother passed away from cancer and the family moved to Centerville, IA where she completed her education, graduating from Centerville High School in 1979. On November 12, 1980 Julie was united in marriage to Steve Brouse at Albia. Julie and Steve made their home in Albia until moving to Jamestown, ND in 1983, and then to Crookston in 1990. During her Crookston years she was employed at the RiverView Hospital as an aide, and later at different times as a housekeeper for the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home. Most recently Julie had been providing Day Care in a safe home away from home, to her Day Care kids. She loved spending time outdoors and fall was her very favorite time of year.

For Julie family meant everything, and being with her soul-mate, Steve; whether they were going places or just hanging out with the kids and grandkids brought her so much joy. She was very proud of her grandchildren, and spoiling them was just what a grandma was put on earth to do. Julie's heart still had room to encompass her love for the pet dogs who shared their home over the years as well. She will be very sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends. Julie leaves her beloved husband of 33 years, Steve; their children and spouses, Joshua (Kristine) Brouse of Valley City, ND, and Shelly (Luke) Pahlen of Crookston, MN; 3 grandchildren: Dominick, Isabel, and Nathan Pahlen; and 2 brothers and 2 sisters: Len (Jobe) Matthies of DesMoines, IA and Alan (Kimberly) Matthies of Smithville, MO, Deborah Wissler and Lori (Mark) Milligan, both of Fremont, IA. Also surviving are her parents-in-law, James Brouse of Detroit Lake, MN and DeLayne Ganser of Jamestown, ND; Steve's siblings: Michael (Candace) Brouse of Mentor, MN, Jim (Julie) Brouse of Frazee, MN, and David (Kristi) Brouse of Grand Rapids, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her 2 year-old son, Michael James, who died of cancer on January 23, 1983; her parents, Leonard and Bonnie Matthies; and a sister, Peggy Jespersen. May God bless the memory of Julie Ann Brouse. A memorial service celebrating Julie's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN with The Rev. Bill Reck, officiating. Visitation with the family will be for one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in the Oakview Cemetery at Albia, IA.
