Lorraine McWaters, 95, of Crookston, MN, died early Sunday morning, December 16, 2012, at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston. She had just entered the Villa 10 days ago. Lorraine was born in Gentilly, MN on June 15, 1917, one of six children of the union of Arthur and Albertine (Sauve) Mercil. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and graduated from Crookston's St. Joseph High School in 1936. Lorraine was united in marriage to Vernon McWaters on November 12, 1938 in Crookston. Together, Lorraine and Vernon raised three children: Charles, Richard, and Kim. Very sadly, a 4th child, Dennis, died in infancy in 1946. During her working life Lorraine was employed with the Peterson-Biddick Company, and later for Jiffy Fry. Vernon passed away on October 19, 1985, and her daughter, Kim Backs, died on May 13, 2005. Lorraine was a devoted member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish and a former member of St. Anne's Sodality and St. Joseph's Club. She had been active in the Golden Link Senior Citizen's Center for many years, and enjoyed playing cards with friends there. Lorraine had a passion for doing embroidery and crocheting, and was an avid crafter. She remained active throughout her 95 years and it was only in the last few weeks that her health failed her. Lorraine will be fondly remembered by her family and friends as they celebrate her 'going home for Christmas.' Left to mourn her passing are 2 sons and a daughter-in-law: Charles McWaters of Crookston, MN, and Dick and Kathy McWaters of Grand Forks, ND; a son-in-law, Mike Backs of Cincinnati, OH; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren: Matthew (Brittni) McWaters and their son, Noah, of Moorhead, MN, Ann (Joe) Borah and their children, Lucas and Jase, of Shorewood, MN, Ashley Backs and fiancé, Devin, and Mara, Dana, and Erin Backs, all of Cincinnati; 2 sisters-in-law, Jean Mercil of Detroit Lakes, MN and Willa Mae Mercil of Grand Forks; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to her husband, Vernon, and children, Dennis and Kim, Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Nora Brusseau; and 4 brothers: Al, Jerry, Lowell, and Ray Mercil. Blessed be Lorraine's memory. The Mass of Christian Burial for Lorraine McWaters will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 20, 2012, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston with The Rev. Vincent Miller, presiding. Visitation will be at the Cathedral for one hour prior to the Mass. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Crookston.
