Lowell Emil Bernd, 77, of Alexandria, MN passed away on August 22, 2016 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, MN. Lowell was born on June 4, 1939 to Omar and Ellen (Nemitz) Bernd. He attended South St. Paul High School and graduated in 1957. He then went to NDSU in Fargo and obtained his B.S. in ME in 1961. Then he went to the U of M and received his MBA in Engineering. During Lowell's life he lived in St. Paul, MN, Rockford, IL, Jacksonville, FL, Denham Springs, LA, and Alexandria, MN. He worked for Lockhead Aviation for three years, where he worked with the space program, St. Paul's 3M Corporation for thirteen years, Sunstrand Aviation in Rockford, IL, Roux Laboratories in Jacksonville, FL for a year, Allied Chemical, Paxton Polymers, and Exxon Mobile while in Baton Rouge, LA. Lowell belonged to the Escapee's Organization in Texas and the R.C. Club in Stillwater, MN. He enjoyed various outdoor recreation activities; including hunting, fishing, RC airplanes, sailboating, RV camping, and traveling after his retirement. In his earlier years he owned his own airplane and was a private pilot. He also enjoyed handyman projects of all sizes. Lowell is survived by his daughter, Kellet (Paul) Ose of Ramsey, MN; son, Chris (Nicole) Bernd of Crookston, MN; grandchildren, Nathen Ose, Nicholas Ose, Sawyer Bernd, and Kristine Bernd; and sister, Patty Reski of Rim Rock, AZ. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Geraldine Bernd; and brother-in-law, John Reski. There will be a private graveside service and burial at General Lutheran Cemetery in South Saint Paul on September 9, 2016.
