Lucille Harriet Johnson, 88, of Crookston, MN, and formerly of Hammond Township, rural Crookston, died peacefully at the RiverView Hospital in Crookston early Wednesday morning, January 18, 2012. Lucille was born on September 7, 1923 to Albert and Helga (Mehle) Edlund in Sundal Township of Norman County near Fertile, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church of rural Fertile, MN. She attended District #72 Country School in Garfield Township until the 8th grade. She attended Fertile High School until her graduation in 1940. After she graduated, Lucille went through nurse's aide training at Bethesda Hospital in Crookston. Lucille then moved to Seattle, Washington and worked as a housekeeper, while living with her great aunt. She then moved back to Minnesota, residing in Minneapolis and working for the McClintok Clock Company. She returned to the Fertile area and helped on the family farm. She then was employed as a housekeeper on the Johnson Brothers Farm in rural Crookston. On June 17, 1961, Lucille married "the boy next door," Walter Albin Johnson, at St. John's Lutheran Church near Fertile. The couple settled on Walter's farm in Hammond Township, and together raised two daughters, Marilyn and Gayle. Lucille was an active lady. She and Walter were lifelong members of St. John's Lutheran Church where she served as the church financial secretary and sexton for the St. John's Southside Cemetery until recent years, and a member of the Hammond Homemaker's Club and the St. John's Luther League. In October of 2008, Lucille and Walter were named as Crookston's Experienced Americans. Lucille enjoyed gardening, especially growing geraniums, tulips, and peonies; canning, and going shopping in Crookston on Thursdays followed by meeting her daughters for lunch. Lucille was a genuine and caring woman who was the glue that held the family together. She knew the importance of relationships and made a point of keeping them strong through daily phone calls and cards. Lucille is survived by two daughters, Marilyn (Bill) Wahouske of Crookston and Gayle (Mike) Ecklund of Baudette, MN; seven grandchildren, Lauren, Cole, Caitlin, and Kendall Wahouske, and Amanda, Samantha, and Wyatt Ecklund; one sister, Annette (Ogden Jr.) Farder of Erskine, MN; sister-in-law, Arlene Edlund of Fertile; brother-in-laws Rudolph Johnson of Fertile and Kenneth (Verla) Johnson of Gary, MN; and two cousins, Vernon Floan of Fertile and Lorraine Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
