Lulu Jean Nelson, age 90, of Crookston, MN, died February 7, 2015 at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Her children were at her side. Lou, as she was affectionately known throughout her life, was born at Elmore, MN on September 8, 1924 to Leonard and Lillian Clara (Smith) Loge. She graduated from high school in 1942 in Montevideo. She graduated from Hamline University in St. Paul with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing. She married Dean Francis Nelson at the bride's home in Montevideo in June 1947. Their marriage would be blessed over the years by the births of four children: Jeff, Mark, Neal, and Debra. The couple moved to Minneapolis where Lou was employed as an LPN as Dean finished work on his Bachelors Degree from the University of Minnesota. They moved to Buffalo, MN, and to Crookston in 1953 where Dean managed the Federal Land Bank office. In 1963, Lou earned an RN degree and was 'capped' in a ceremony honoring her achievement. Lulu Jean worked as the campus nurse for the University of Minnesota Technical College in Crookston from 1963 on and was active as a County Health Nurse. Lulu Jean earned her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1969. The University of North Dakota in Grand Forks chose her to develop a Geriatric Rehabilitation Nursing program which she then taught at the UND of School of Nursing. Simultaneously she created curriculum for nursing continuing education for the Minnesota Nurses Association. She was a featured instructor at these seminars. Lou and Dean enjoyed travel and participating in elder hostel programs after retirement. They spent several months at a Saddlery School in Minatare, Nebraska where each made a saddle 'from scratch'. Lou and Dean were trained to serve as mediators between farmers and lenders in the 1980s
Lou was a devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, WELCA, the Joanna-Naomi Circle, the Choir, and the QuiltMakers. She was an avid reader, and did embroidery painting and rosemaling. Lou was active in the League of Women Voters during the 1960's. She proudly attended the 60th reunion of her class at Hamline University in St. Paul recently, and enjoyed reminiscing with old friends. Lou will be very lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her family and many friends. Lou is survived by her 4 children and their families: Jeff and Katie Nelson of Ormond Beach, FL, Mark and Deb Nelson of Palouse, WA, Neal and Brenda Nelson of Ft. Worth, TX, and Debra Nelson and her husband, David Knutson, of Suquamish, WA; 5 grandchildren: Chris, Keni, Becky, Rachel, and Krystian; and 2 great-grandchildren, Victor and Natalia. She also leaves a sister-in-law, Mary Loge of Onalaska, WI; 2 nephews, Ron Loge of Red Wing, MN and Scott Loge of Onalaska; and other relatives. In addition to Dean, her beloved husband of 55 years, Lou was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Roland Loge. May God richly bless the memory of Lulu Jean Nelson.
