Lyla Mae Johnson, 83, of Fargo, ND and formerly of Crookston, MN, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2012 in Manor Care Health Services in Fargo.
Lyla Johnson was born to David and Evelyn (Capistran) Altepeter on February 23, 1929 in Crookston, MN. She grew up in Crookston and graduated from the Cathedral High School in 1947. Lyla married Lester Olaf Johnson on June 7, 1947 and continued to reside in Crookston until moving to West Fargo, ND in August of 2010, to be closer to the Roger Maris Cancer Center for her treatments. Lyla was a member of Blessed Sacrament in West Fargo. She was also a lifetime member of the VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. Lyla was a kind and giving person. She enjoyed her family, gardening, crocheting, and the occasional trip to the casino. She worked a variety of jobs over the years including working in the beet fields, potato picking, Woolworths, Ben Franklin, S&L Department Store, the Jiffy Fry, and as a nursing assistant at St. Francis Hospital. At one point, she even had a state cream testing license. Lyla obtained her LPN license in 1972 per government waiver after her many years as a nursing assistant. She was working at the Riverview Nursing Home in Crookston until her retirement in 1994 and proceeded to work for the Lutheran Social Services providing respite cares.
Lyla is survived by her special friend, Leonard Hegg of Duluth, MN; sons, Gregory (Claudia) Johnson of Virgil, SD, Stanton (Cristina) Johnson of Lynd, MN, Richard Johnson of Lynd, MN, Eugene Johnson of East Grand Forks, MN; daughters, Delphine (Larry) Hanson of Osage, MN, Jennifer Erickson of West Fargo, ND, and Cynthia Alfaro of Richardson, TX. She also leaves behind eighteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, James (Twylla) Altepeter of Crookston, and one sister, Marilyn Schulz of Crookston. Lyla is preceded in death by her loving husband, Lester Olaf Johnson; both parents, David and Evelyn Altepeter; daughter, Louise Mae Johnson; and three brothers, Gerald Altepeter, Kenneth Altepeter, and Donald Altepeter. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Lyla Mae Johnson will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 13, 2012, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston, MN. Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home on Monday, March 12, 2012, from 5-7:00 pm, with a 7:00 pm prayer service. Visitation will also be at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
