Marlene Rae Jansen, age 70, of Crookston, MN, died early Thursday morning, October 3, 2013, at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, with her husband, David, and other family members at her side. Marlene was born in Crookston on March 2, 1943, the daughter of Allen and Marion (Scarr) Muir. She was baptized and confirmed at Wesley United Methodist Church in Crookston and attended Crookston Public Schools, graduating from Central High School. Marlene went on to attend Glamour Beauty School in Minneapolis, graduating from there as a licensed cosmetologist. She then moved to Grand Forks, ND to make her home, and worked at several salons in the city. After several years, she became an instructor at the Hair Designers Academy, a position she held for a number of years. On September 3, 1987, Marlene was united in marriage to David G. Jansen, Ph.D., at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Grand Forks. The couple made their home in Grand Forks and created a blended family between her 3 children and David's 5 children. In 1998, Marlene and David moved to Crookston, where they have been living to the present time. Marlene was a very active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Crookston for many years, where she sang in the choir, served as treasurer, and participated in WELCA. She was a longtime member and onetime president of the RiverView Hospital Association Auxiliary and was a frequent volunteer in the hospital's gift shop. At the time of her passing, she was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. Dogs were a part of Marlene's life from her childhood, and over the years she had many pets, who all assumed their roles as part of the family. She enjoyed crafting, and loved spending time outdoors tending her flower gardens. Marlene was an awesome cook and loved hosting family and friends in her home. David says she spoiled him from ever wanting to go out to a restaurant, and her children remember with smiles how she would critique her fabulous meals, finding fault where there absolutely wasn't any. Marlene will be forever remembered as a warm, kind, generous and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many; always ready to lend a generous hand when needed. May God bless the memory of Marlene Rae Jansen. Marlene leaves her beloved husband of 26 years, David; her 3 children: Stephanie (Jim) Selby of Zeeland, MI, Stacie (Shawn) Rumsey of Holland, MI, and Kenneth "Steve" Bakke (Sara Daugherty) of Grand Forks, ND; 5 step-children: Loren (Laura) Jansen of St. Peter, MN, Lawrence Jansen of St. Cloud, MN, Sharon (Travis) Smith of Manhattan, KS, Dean (Carolyn) Jansen of Warsaw, IN, and Lowell Jansen of Brooklyn Center, MN; numerous grandchildren; a sister and 2 brothers: Marcia (George) Allison of Crookston, MN; Robert (Jeanne) Muir of Danville, KY; and Ronald Muir of Fairbanks, AK; a brother-in-law and 2 sisters-in-law: Harold (Betty) Jansen of Rapid City, SD, Bonnie Bies of Yorba Linda, CA; and Edith Cousins of Nowthen, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
