Mildred Rose Vilven, 85, of Crookston, MN, died Thursday, December 26, 2013, at the Villa St. Vincent. Mildred was born on February 7, 1928 at Dorothy, MN to Napoleon and Emelda (Huot) Cota. She grew up on the family's rural Dorothy farm, was baptized and confirmed at St. Dorothy's Catholic Church, and attended a nearby country school. Mildred went on to high school in Red Lake Falls, MN and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1946. On May 4, 1948 she was united in marriage to Milo Charles Vilven at St. Dorothy's Catholic Church. The couple lived in Crookston for a short time before moving to a farm east of Angus, MN. There they raised their 4 children: Linda, Diane, Edward, and Scott. Milo and Mildred retired from farming in 1980 and several years later moved into Crookston. Milo passed away on August 18, 2000. Their son, Edward, died on July 22, 2005, and daughter, Diane Renee Mackowick, on April 25, 2012. In September of 2012 Mildred became a resident of the Villa St. Vincent. Mildred was a devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Euclid, MN when living on their farm, and of the Cathedral parish in Crookston after moving. She was active in the local Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life chapter and the Catholic Daughters. Together, the couple both participated in the TEC program at St. Mary's. Mildred also belonged to the local Birthday Club for many years. After Milo's passing she became involved in the Foster Grandparent Program at Crookston's Washington School. Mildred and Milo enjoyed traveling during their retirement, and in her younger days, and with better eyesight, she enjoyed reading and doing embroidery. Family meant so much to her and she felt fulfilled when she gained the title of "grandma." Mildred touched the lives and hearts of many and she will be very lovingly remembered and sadly missed. Family members include 2 children, Linda (Gene) Shomshak of St. Michael, MN and Scott (Susan) Vilven of Crookston, MN; 2 grandsons, Derrick and Brett Vilven; a son-in-law, Jon Mackowick of Crookston; sister, Alice Sirek of Fargo, ND; brother, Edward (Sherriann) Cota of Red Lake Falls, MN; 4 sisters-in-law: Agnes Cota of Red Lake Falls, Marlene Cota of St. Hilaire, MN, Stella Fitzsimmons of Warren, MN, and Joan Vilven of Farmington, NM; as well as, many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
