Milo Ordean Urness, 84, of Crookston, MN, died late Monday afternoon, February 16, 2015, at the RiverView Care Center in Crookston. Milo was born at Crookston on August 7, 1930, the son of Melvin O. and Myrtle (Kroken) Urness. He grew up on the family farm in Polk County, first in Russia Township and later in Onstad Township, and was baptized and confirmed at the Hafslo Lutheran Church. He attended Wayside District #285 country school, and graduated from Fertile High School in 1947. Milo enlisted in the US Navy on April 10, 1951. He served stateside aboard the USS Orion and received his honorable discharge on July 24, 1952. Milo returned to Fertile and was united in marriage to Blanche Gullickson on August 21, 1954 at Rindal, MN. Their marriage was blessed by the births of five children: Diane, Danny, David, Denise, and Darrin. Milo was employed by Culligan Soft Water in Fertile until 1967. The family then moved to Beltrami and he worked for Cenex/Farmers Union. Milo later established Smiley's Plumbing and Heating, a business he owned and operated until retirement in 1993. Milo's passion was gardening, and people were always driving by the house to see his flowers in full bloom. For several years he took great pleasure in bringing altar flowers to Trinity Lutheran Church in Beltrami for Sunday worship. Visits with his children and their families meant the world to Milo and they will miss him dearly. Milo is survived by four children: Danny Urness, David Urness, and Denise Urness, all of Crookston, and Darrin Urness of Hartford, SD; three grandchildren: Michelle Urness of New Richmond, WI, and Katelynn and Lucas Urness of Sioux Falls, SD; and a great- granddaughter, Danielle Adelman of New Richmond. He also leaves two sisters, Maxine Witt and Marsha (Vernon) Olson, both of Fertile, MN; sister-in-law, Janice Urness of Beltrami, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche, who died on January 9, 1991; daughter, Diane, who died on November 2, 2012; his parents, Melvin and Myrtle Urness and parents-in-law, Gullick and Minnie Gullickson; brother, Mylan Lee Urness; and sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Kenneth Bernstein.
