Myrtle Moen

Myrtle I. Moen, age 94, Crookston, died Sunday, December 8, 2013 at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston. Myrtle Irene Hegge was born on September 19, 1919 in Adams, MN, daughter of Klemmet and Rachel (Hippie) Hegge. The family moved to Eldred, MN, when Myrtle was a year old and she grew up and attended school there. She was confirmed in the First English Lutheran Church at Eldred. She was united in marriage with Henry Moen on June 11, 1939 on the Moen family farm (now in its fourth generation of family ownership). When her children were young, Myrtle helped with the Band Mothers Club at the Climax School. She served with the Sand Hill Ladies Aide as Secretary and was also active in the church. They farmed together until Henry's death on January 16, 1964. Following Henry's death, Myrtle worked at Lil's Café in Climax, then at the Pizza Plaza in Crookston and then at the Hardware Store in Climax. She enjoyed gardening, canning and baking. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed doing needlework. She moved into Crookston in 1981 and was living in the Nimens Espegard apartments before entering the Villa St. Vincent. While at Nimens, she volunteered in the kitchen, drove others around town for appointments and shopping and helped a neighbor upstairs with her daily eyedrops. Myrtle is survived by her children: Mylan (Janet) Moen of Bemidji, MN, Sandra (Fabian) Yanez of Campbell, MN, Rick (Judy) Moen of Climax, MN, Diane (David) Morken of Fisher, MN, Bonnie (Joseph) Munn of Crookston, MN, Julie (Keith) Dale of Climax, MN and Karen (Ronald) Vedbraaten of Fosston, MN; a daughter-in-law: Phyllis Moen of Minneapolis, MN; a son-in-law: Ervin Fahrenkrug; twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren; a sister: Elsie Higgins of Shawnee, KS; a sister-in-law: Alice Hegge of East Grand Forks, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents: Klemmet and Rachel Hegge; her husband: Henry; five brothers and four sisters; a son: Arnold Moen; a daughter: Janice Fahrenkrug; and a grandson: Eric Munn. Myrtle's funeral service will be at 11 AM, Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the Sand Hill Lutheran Church, rural Climax, with the Rev. Joy Grainger, officiating. Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston on Friday from 5-7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM and also at the church for one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Interment will be in the Sand Hill Lutheran Cemetery, rural Climax. Stenshoel-Houske is assisting with the arrangements.
