Olaf Millard Wegge, 93, of Halstad, MN, died Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at the Halstad Living Center. Olaf was born in Traill County, near Buxton, ND, on May 26, 1918 to Thormod and Maria (Johannson) Wegge. He moved to Detroit, MI in 1937 and began working at the Egeland Service Station. He entered into military service on March 18, 1941 with the 137th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. During WWII Olaf served in the European Theater of Operations at Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, and Ardennes. A grateful nation presented him the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 overseas bars and the Good Conduct Medal. Olaf was honorably discharged, with the rank of Staff Sergeant, on October 17, 1945, and returned to Detroit where he was employed by Midwest Steel and Macs Valve. In May of 2010 he moved to the Halstad Living Center to be near family and friends. Olaf is survived by a brother, Roy (Florence) Wegge of Leonard, ND; a sister, Theresa Silver of Sacramento (Citrus Heights), CA; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; 6 brothers, John, Sigurd, Leonard, Thorwald, Ovey, and Edwin Wegge; and a sister, Ruth Ranten. May God bless Olaf's memory. Memorials in Olaf's name may be given to the Salem Lutheran Church.
