Pauline "Polly" Shafer, age 74, of Crookston died Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND. Funeral Mass will be said at 2 p.m. Friday, January 8, 2016 in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Crookston. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral and Cremation Service in Crookston with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass in the Church. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Crookston, MN. Polly was born to James and Helen (Witzman) Walsh on February 8, 1941 in Roseau County, Minnesota. She grew up on the family farm in Badger, Minnesota and was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church. She attended country school until 8th grade and then St. Joseph's Academy in Crookston, graduating in 1959. She met and married Allan Douglas Shafer from Greenbush on July 9, 1960 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Badger. After marriage they moved to Crookston where they raised their family. Polly loved kids which led her to doing daycare out of her home for 14 years. Polly had various jobs in Crookston where recently she enjoyed very much being a foster grandparent at Washington School. Polly was active in the church and strong in her faith which she learned from her mother. Polly was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Allan in 1991; three brothers, Jim, George, and Charles Walsh; two sisters, Mary Monsrud and Sarah Johnson; and two brothers-in-law, Ray Johnson and Roy Hlucny. Polly is survived by her children, Vern (Lori) Shafer of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Monica (Greg) Riley of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, Lorri (Steve) Wochnick of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Kent (Nancy) Shafer, and Ray Shafer all of Crookston, Minnesota, and Joel Shafer (Kristin Hoyt) of Tower City, North Dakota; 17 grandchildren, Adam Wochnick, Dustin Wochnick, Alex Sandoe, Matthew Wochnick, Elaina Rivard, Abbe Dale, Jared Shafer, Derek Wochnick, Samantha Shafer, Philip Shafer, Christina Shafer, Sam Shafer, Randy Shafer, Andy Shafer, Lydia Shafer, Aaron Riley, and Mara Riley; five great grandchildren, Eli Paulhe, Ivan Rivard, Tanner, Mason and Annora Wochnick; three sisters, Sister Luella Walsh of Rio Grande, Texas, Jeanette (Richard) Ecklund of Alexandria, Minnesota, and Helen Hlucny of Greenbush, Minnesota; brothers, Allan Walsh of Badger, Minnesota, Leonard Walsh of Oregon; sister-in-law Phyllis Walsh from Badger, Minnesota; brother-in-law Howard Monsrud, in theTwin Cities; brother and sister-in-law Dean and Diane Shafer; sisters-in-law Cheryl Kvien, Mary (Karl) Kjersten and Nancy (Duke) Reed; as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
