Roy Osburn Waters, 87, of Crookston, MN died Sunday, February 2 at Valley Transitional Care in Grand Forks, ND following a brief battle with cancer. Roy was born January 14, 1927 in Salt Lake City, UT. He grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and graduated from high school in The Dalles, OR. He received his BS Degree at the University of Oregon, and his MA in Psychiatric Social Work from the University of Chicago. He served in the Aleutian Campaign in Alaska during WWII, from 1943 – 1944, and in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 – 1954. Roy was married to Frances Pauline (Paula) McBryde on June 14, 1957 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. They had two children, Eric Anthony and Karen Lynn. Roy and Paula moved to Crookston in 1964. Roy served as Program Director for the NW Mental Health Center for 21 years prior to his retirement. In that role, he was instrumental in the creation of Glenmore Treatment Center and the NW Regional Corrections Center in Crookston. His community service includes the Tri County Corrections Board, Polk County DAC Board, Riverview Hospital Board, American Legion Board, and membership in many fraternal organizations. Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Patricia M. Waters and Ray L. Waters; a sister, Margaret Bobisud Weed, and two brothers, Jack and Jerry Waters. He is survived by his wife, Paula; son Eric (Pam) Waters, Minnetonka, MN; daughter Karen (Randy) Lee, Circle Pines, MN; grandchildren, Jennifer Lee, Hopkins, MN, David Lee, Orlando, FL and Ben (Meghan) Becker, Minneapolis, MN; and sister Lois May (Sally) Graham, Tacoma, WA. Roy's Memorial Service/Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 8 at 2 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Crookston. Visitation will be for one hour before the service at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Crookston Veterans Council. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the First Presbyterian Church, NW Mental Health Center, or the charity of your choice. Stenshoel-Houske is assisting with arrangements.
