Russell Strand Johnson, 82, of Crookston, Minnesota passed away the morning of March 4, 2012 in the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston. Russell was born to Oscar and Mathea (Strand) Johnson on October 17, 1929 on the family farm in Russia Township of Polk County. He attended country school while working on the family farm with his parents, and high school at the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston. He lived in Russia Township until his marriage to Catherine Todroff on May 26, 1956 in Crookston. Russell took over and ran the family farm until its sale in the late 1970's. He was also employed by the City of Crookston in the 1950's with the street department; and owned and operated several businesses, including an antique shop in Gary, MN; Russell S. Johnson Auctioneering, Russell S. Johnson Auto, and RJ's Bar & Grill in Fertile, MN.
Russell was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and was especially proud of his grandchildren. As an auctioneer, he was always looking for something to buy and sell at auctions, flea markets, and rummage sales. When he was not attending auctions, Russell enjoyed deer hunting and fishing, playing cards, and visiting with anyone he encountered. Russell will be greatly missed by his children; Rodney (June) Johnson of Crookston, Cheryl (Ken) Lake of Seattle, WA, and Dwight Johnson of Crookston; ten grandchildren, Amy (Tim) Smith, Michael Matchett, Alicia, Ryan, Rodney Jr., and Leah Johnson; Angela and Tyler Johnson; Darby (Dale) Brannan and Emily Lake; six great-grandchildren, Denae Smith, Mathea Smith, Jocelyn Johnson, Molly Workman, Olivia Brannan, and Alicia Brannan; and nephew, Marlo Moren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Mathea (Strand) Johnson and sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Art Moren.
