Viola C. Berg, age 90, of Crookston, MN, died peacefully Sunday morning, October 5, 2014, at the RiverView Care Center in Crookston. Vi had been a resident of the Care Center since June of 2011. She was born at Dubuque, IA on December 18, 1923, the daughter of Arnold and Mildred (Birch) Block. Vi grew up in Dubuque where she graduated from high school in the early 1940's. On July 17, 1948 she was united in marriage to Climax, MN native, Lawrence T. Berg, at St. Paul, MN. The couple lived in St. Paul for a short time before moving to rural Climax, where Lawrence managed his parents' farm. A few years later they moved back to St. Paul and then came to Crookston. Eventually they settled at Gentilly, MN. Vi was a busy homemaker and devoted herself to looking after Lawrence. Over the years he was employed at Peterson-Biddick, Jiffy Fry, and the Dahlgen Company, all in Crookston, until retiring in 1982. Vi and Lawrence later moved back to Crookston. Sadly, Lawrence passed away on January 27, 1996. Vi loved entertaining and visiting and was known as a great cook and baker, making everything that graced her table from scratch. She will be very lovingly remembered and sadly missed. Vi is survived by a half-brother, Richard Block and half-sister, Edith Dieters, both of Dubuque, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to her beloved husband, Lawrence, Vi was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Lawrence Berg; her parents, Arnold and Mildred; sister, Arlene Berg; brothers, Arnold and Charles Block; and 4 half-siblings: Helen Bechen, Thelma Thurston, and Robert and Donald Block. Blessed be the memory of Viola Berg.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Viola will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 9, 2014, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Gentilly, MN with The Rev. Vincent Miller, presiding. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the funeral and interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. The Dubuque, IA members of Vi's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Jimmy and Marlys Johnson of Crookston for looking after Aunt Vi during the last years of her life and making sure she felt safe and loved.
