Yvonne Gail Engelstad, age 77, of Nielsville, MN, passed away early Saturday morning, December 8, 2012, at the Halstad (MN) Living Center, with her loving family at her side. Yvonne was born at Fosston, MN on October 25, 1935 to Joseph O. and Hilda (Egeland) Einess. As a young girl she moved with her family to Bingham, UT, returning with them to the area in 1945, first settling in Lengby, and then McIntosh. In 1947 they moved to Climax, MN after purchasing Corner "Joe's" Cafe. Yvonne graduated from Climax High School in 1953 and spent the next year at UND in Grand Forks. After receiving an Associate Degree from the Interstate Business College in Fargo, ND, Yvonne moved to Crookston, where she was employed in the office of the Otter Tail Power Company. On March 23, 1957 she was united in marriage to DuWayne Engelstad, of Nielsville, in a ceremony held at Crookston's Trinity Lutheran Church. Yvonne and DuWayne lived on their Hubbard Township farm to the present time, and it is also where they proudly raised their two children, Darin and Kristi. Yvonne did the bookkeeping for the couple's vast farming operation and drove truck during the beet harvest. She and DuWayne loved traveling throughout the United States, and spending summers at their home on Lake Sallie, near Detroit Lakes, MN. For the past 36 years they had enjoyed winter months at their property in Hawaii. In her younger years Yvonne enjoyed ice skating, participating in a women's bowling league, and 'powder puff' racing at the Glyndon, MN Speedway during the late 1950's. She was a fierce competitor and had the trophies to attest to her skill behind the wheel. As she "tamed down" a little, Yvonne enjoyed spending time in her beautiful flower gardens, bird watching, golfing and playing miniature golf, and sewing, which was a talent she inherited from her mother. Yvonne loved going shopping, and with a twinkle in his eye, DuWayne can tell many stories about how he got all her purchases home safely over the years. She was a longtime member of the St. Petri Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid (WELCA), and also belonged to the Birthday Club. Yvonne was devoted to DuWayne, and very proud of her kids and their spouses (her other kids.) She delighted in keeping up with all the activities of her granddaughters, Kyli and Grace, and would rarely miss one of their volleyball matches or basketball games as they played for the Knights. Yvonne touched the lives of many, and she will be very lovingly remembered and sadly missed. Yvonne leaves her beloved husband and soul-mate of 55 years, DuWayne; son and daughter-in-law, Darin and Kaylin Engelstad of Nielsville, MN; daughter and son-in-law, Kristi and James Bowling of Shelly, MN; granddaughters, Kyli and Grace Bowling of Shelly; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Glen and Lucy Einess of Bloomington, MN and Del and Maylu Einess of Sarasota, FL; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Judith and Bernard Semeling of Nielsville; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Hilda Einess; and an infant brother, Warren. May God richly bless Yvonne's memory. A Celebration of Life service for Yvonne Gail Engelstad will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday, December 13, 2012, at the St. Petri Lutheran Church in Nielsville, MN, with The Rev. Valerian Ahles, officiating. Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston on Wednesday from 5-7:00 pm, with a 7:00 pm prayer service, and also at the Church for one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in the St. Petri Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be given in Yvonne's name to your favorite charity or the ALS Association of Minnesota.
