Yvonne Rose "Bunny" Ogaard, 82, of Crookston, MN, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND, with her loving family at her side.
Yvonne was born on November 20, 1934 at Minneapolis, MN, the youngest of 6 children born to the union of Martin and Mary (Grones) Ziehl. Bunny, as she came to be affectionately known, grew up in Minneapolis; was baptized and confirmed at the Ascension Catholic Church; and attended Minneapolis schools. As a young woman, she was at the Marigold Ballroom one evening and met a young man from Crookston, Vernon Ogaard, who was employed by the Scott Atwater Company in Minneapolis. If it wasn't love at first sight, it soon grew and blossomed into what would become a lifetime of devotion to each other. Bunny and Vern were united in marriage at the Ascension Church on September 29, 1951. The couple moved to Crookston in 1952 to create a loving home in which to raise their 9 children: Chris, Scott, Tom, Julie, Mark, Mike, David, Dennis, and Cheryl. While maintaining a very busy household, Bunny still found time to work in the Central High School cafeteria. She was later employed for many years as the bookkeeper for Ivan Fisher at Munn's Jewelers.
Bunny was a very humble, soft-spoken woman with a deep and abiding faith, which she passed on to her children. She taught them all so much about life, including how to enjoy the successes and never let the disappointments rule the day. In her words, "If something is wrong, fix it; if it can't be fixed, be quiet about it." Her family was her world and she and Vern never missed any of her kids sporting events or school activities. Visits from them all, especially the grandkids, meant everything, particularly during the last weeks of her illness. For the kids memories of long ago winter Saturdays and skating on a pond near their home included coming home to Mom's tomato soup, mounds of grilled cheese sandwiches, and a huge pot of hot chocolate. The big cookie tin in the kitchen was viewed by them as one of the most valued possessions she (or they) had. Bunny made the most amazing molasses cookies ever, and that tin was always full. It still, to this day, makes an appearance at every family gathering.
Bunny was a devoted member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish, and the St. Rose of Lima Circle. She attended Mass every morning, and could always be found performing little tasks around the church. She and Vern bowled in a mixed couples league in Crookston for several years, and in February of 2007 were honored as Crookston's Experienced Americans of the Month. Very sadly, Vern passed away on October 10, 2010. Bunny was an avid quilter, expertly making them and gifting them with love to her family. She loved to garden, and volunteered countless hours of her time to the Polk County Historical Society and the Villa St. Vincent, where she enjoyed doing hair styling for the residents.
Yvonne's memory will be forever cherished by her 9 children and their spouses: Chris and Jenny Ogaard of Plymouth, MN, Scott and Debbie Ogaard of North Richland Hills, TX, Tom and Mary Kay Ogaard of Broomfield, CO, Julie and Bryan Miller of Buffalo, MN, Mark and Carrie Ogaard of Stillwater, MN, Mike and Jeanne Ogaard of Mankato, MN, David and Kathy Ogaard of Coon Rapids, MN, Dennis Ogaard of Allen, TX, and Cheryl and Steve Dahl of Ham Lake, MN; 26 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She also leaves 2 sisters-in-law, Toki Ziehl of Marysville, CA and Vivian Arel of Crookston, MN; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to her beloved husband of 59 years, Vern, Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Mary; and 5 siblings: Rita (Richard) Anderson, James Ziehl, Patricia (Art) Pratt, and Wallace and Kenneth Ziehl, who died as boys. Blessed be the life of Yvonne "Bunny" Ogaard.
