Stanley Davis

June 4, 1929 — April 9, 2014

Stanley Davis, 84, of Crookston, MN, died at his home Wednesday, April 9, 2014 with his loving family at his side. He had been struggling with cancer for the past several months.

Stan was born in Crookston on June 4, 1929, and was the fourth of five children of the union of William "Bill" and Lillian (Flewell) Davis. He grew up on a farm at Harold Station, near Crookston, and attended country school. As a teenager, Stan was employed locally by Welter Plumbing and the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Later he worked for a custom combining crew, traveling down south to help with the grain harvests, and then for REA, erecting power lines in Tennessee. He returned to the area and began driving for the Haugen Truck Line in 1950. On September 18, 1951 Stan was drafted into the United States Marine Corp and was deployed to South Korea during the Korean War. He was wounded in action on November 30, 1952 and awarded the Purple Heart. In early 1953 Stan came home on leave to visit his mother, who was gravely ill. During this brief stay, he married the love of his life, Doris Houfburg, on March 28, 1953 at the First Presbyterian Church in Crookston. Doris was able to join Stan for a short time in Fallbrook, CA upon his return to active duty. Though she had to return to Crookston, Doris was soon able to rejoin Stan and be with him until their return to Crookston following his honorable discharge on September 17, 1953. For his patriotism and service to his country, Stan was awarded the National Defense Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 3 Stars, the UN Service Medal, and the Bronze Star. He resumed his employment with Haugen Trucking until 1960 when he began working as a driver for Glendenning Motorways. Stan and Doris raised four children: Michael, Gail, Kathryn, and Brian. Stan and son, Michael, were baptized on the same day in October of 1954 at the First Presbyterian Church. Very sadly, at the age of 19, Michael died in a car accident on August 5, 1973 near Red Lake Falls. Stan retired from Glendenning in 1989, and in semi-retirement was employed for a short time at the Crookston Arena, then as a custodian at the Bremer Bank for nine years, followed in 1999 by twelve years as a caretaker for the Summerfield Apartments. Stan's favorite pastime was gardening and he took great joy in sharing the fruits of his labor. He was a humble man, never one to boast, a hard worker, and coupled with his many talents, the person who could fix anything. Throughout his life, these were but a few of the traits that endeared him to family and friends alike. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Nels T. Wold American Legion Post #20, and a former member of VFW Post #1902 and Eagles Aerie #873. Stan treasured his sixty-one years of marriage to his beloved, Doris, and was very proud of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure. Stan leaves behind Doris; their three children: Gail Welle of Fergus Falls, MN, Kathryn (Michael) Moe of Hawley, MN, and Brian (Jean) Davis of Maple Grove, MN; six grandchildren: Aaron (Alani) Welle, Jared Welle, Robin (Karl) Berg, Lindsey (Lyal) Held, Ben and Taylor Davis; and three great-grandchildren: Reise and Kendal Berg, and Brody Held. He is also survived by 3 brothers and a sister: Bernard Davis of Laramie, WY, Lester Davis of Duluth, MN, Frank Davis of Hamel, MN, and Marian Knipe of San Diego, CA; Robert and Joanie Houfburg of Lake Miltona, MN, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, along with several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to his son, Michael Jon, Stan was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lillian; a son-in-law, Brian Welle, who died in 2007; and his parents-in-law, Ivar and Olive Houfburg. May God bless Stan's memory. The funeral service and celebration of the life of Stanley Davis will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at the First Presbyterian Church in Crookston with The Reverend Trey Everett officiating.
