Joan Claire Radi, 83, longtime Crookston, MN resident, passed away peacefully with her family at her side, Thursday, September 27, 2018, in the John Muir Hospital in Concord, CA, after a brief illness. She had been living with her daughter, Wanette “Winnie” Oxley, in Concord for the past few months.
Joan was born in Crookston on July 17, 1935, the daughter of John and Inez (Steffen) Wigand. She attended Crookston schools and was a 1953 graduate of Central High School. Joan was united in marriage to Wayne Arnold Radi on November 19, 1953 in Crookston. Through the years their marriage was blessed by the births of 6 children: Wanette, Glen, Clairene, Anita, Curtis, and Bruce. The couple first lived in Saginaw, MI before returning to Crookston in 1955. Wayne was employed by the Otter Tail Power Company and Joan dedicated her life to running a very busy household, while finding time to also provide bookkeeping services to several Crookston businesses. Following retirement Joan and Wayne spent several winters as “snowbirds” in Arizona and Texas where they made many new friends. Sadly, Wayne passed away on May 18, 2013.
Joan was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for her entire life, participated in WELCA activities, served on several committees, and helped with the Work and Serve group whenever needed. She was a member of the Firemen’s Auxiliary and enjoyed the company of the Red Hat Ladies. Her favorite pastimes included knitting, sewing, quiet time spent reading, and league bowling with friends in her younger years. Joan had been continuing to travel south up to this past winter and was hoping to do so again. She will be forever missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who celebrate and remember her life with tears of joy.
Joan is survived by her 6 loving children: Wanette (Fred) Oxley of Concord, CA, Glen Radi of Denver, CO, Clairene (Barney) Irwin of Duluth, MN, Anita (Allen) Brekken of Crookston, MN, Curtis (Karen) Radi of Huntington Beach, CA, and Bruce Radi of Irvine, CA; 9 grandchildren: Jeffrey, Tyler, Cody, and Jordan Brekken, Benjamin Oxley, Wyatt Irwin, Brandon Milburn, and Chase and Caroline Radi; 11 great-grandchildren: Levi, Layne, Freya, and Finn Brekken, Carter, Nolan, Grant, and Davis Oxley, and Deglan, Ella, and Georgia Milburn; brother-in-law, Joe Grenier of East Grand Forks, MN; sisters-in-law, Marlyne Dalzell of Albertville, MN and Sherry (Ken) Coauette of East Grand Forks, MN; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She is preceded in death by Wayne, her beloved husband of 59 years; parents, John and Inez Wigand; sister, Carol Grenier; and parents-in-law, Arnold and Dora Radi. May God richly bless Joan’s memory.
